WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — When New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger won his seat in last year’s election, he quickly gained a reputation of wanting to fight the perceived “good ol’ boy network” and bring change to the county.

Now, just a few months into his term, he’s also got a reputation for not being able to show up on time. He’s consistently late to meetings. Thursday, he was 20 minutes late for an agenda meeting. Other commissioners even called him out saying they were tired of his tardiness. Then Friday, he was a no-show for an important breakfast meeting between commissioners and the New Hanover County School Board.

Mr. Berger, being on time is a basic element of doing any job well. You should be experienced enough to know that. Consistently being late is not only unprofessional, it’s disrespectful. If someone at this television station had the attendance record YOU have, they wouldn’t be here very long.

Mr. Berger, you wanted this job. You ran for it. And the voters gave you an opportunity and the privilege to do it. Now, you repay them with these shenanigans?

And let’s not forget, you were able to find the time to write that six-page e-mail manifesto a few weeks back, slamming County Manager Bruce Shell and his staff for not being as “timely” as you thought they should be on getting you information on air quality research.

It’s going to be a very long 3.5-year term if you keep this up, Mr. Berger. You’re quickly losing any credibility you may have had as an outsider wanting to initiate reform.

May we suggest showing some respect for your constituents? Buy an alarm clock, use it and try to be on time from now on. If not, please step aside and let someone more professional, more capable and more punctual do the job!
