WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Local activist Ben McCoy sent the following news release to the local media today, complaining that New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield didn’t ask for a nay vote today on purchasing new land for parks….

“During the New Hanover County Commission meeting Monday morning, one issue garnering a lot of press was that of the purchase of more than 80 acres in the Smith Creek area for parks and amenities for almost $4 million. Several initial reports stated that the vote was unanimously in favor of the expenditure; however, upon close examination, it was noticed that the call for “all those opposed” by Chairman Barfield was apparently never made, and therefore the lone dissenting vote of Brian Berger, was never heard…”

McCoy was also upset about our coverage of Berger being late to a meeting Thursday, AWOL from a meeting Friday, and then again today when we reported that Berger told us he would do an interview at the commissioners meeting but then ran away from our reporter.

Here’s what he had to say….

Bucking for a Pulitzer are we? Great reporting! Especially the witty remark at the end wondering whether Berger is talking about attendance policies – extremely professional. Thank God we have WWAY out there really bringing maturity and relevance to journalism like no other. I have a great idea for a follow up story that would also encourage reader interaction – post a full body shot of Berger, create a little Flash game in which people choose from a variety of clothing, hats, and accessories to dress him up with. Then, write a BREAKING! article about the funniest one, and post the picture, with a headline such as “Berger wears pink bonnet, negligee, and cowboy boots – WWAY exclusive”. That’ll get him good! And you’ll be blazing new trails in respectable journalism – as you have done so well up to this point.

But that’s not all. He also left these two comments the last couple of days….

Give me a break – this wall-to-wall Berger being late coverage is pathetic. Sure he needs to be on time – but you guys are making this like he committed some atrocious crime – how many more people are going to write some pseudo-witty comment about him being mentally challenged? He’s late to meetings so he’s mentally challenged? Give the guy a break – he took the place of Bill Caster who was a monument to the good ol boys way of doing things – Caster could always be counted on to support the status quo – Berger doesn’t fit the mold, so he’s constantly being marginalized and sidelined. The other commissioners don’t want to work with him; don’t respect the will of the people who elected him there – so they pitch fits and scream and yell so that the mindless, feckless media echo chamber will dutifully continue to fight the PR war against him for the sake of the other commissioners. Then brainless morons who are probably still being breastfed and have never accomplished anything in their wretched lives can show up anonymously on the internet and repeat each other’s comments over and over again; pretending to be original, witty, and intelligent.

Berger was tending to a friend who was in a terrible accident – and as of this writing, I don’t even know if he lost his life or not. I know that is no excuse for missing out on watching Barfield add another 200 lbs. stuffing greasy bacon in his mouth, or listening to Thompson insult the school board for daring to ask for more funding – but that’s just the way it is. So suck it.

His whole existence is to tell lies, to bash, to rant about our civic leaders, past and present, and to pull the strings for his front man, Brian Berger.
But come on Ben, if you have all the answers as you preach, come out behind that computer and microphone and run for office. Maybe you will get lucky and win. Then we can see how well you take the lies, the bashing, the rants and the whining from the childish naive now-it-all pr**ks such as yourself.

item in this post.

He noted the Commissioners apparently approved the purchase of the $3.8 million parcel of land from Swian & Associates.

Scott — with all the relevant opposition and comments to that purchase, and with Commissioner Caster’s statement that this had to pass the smell test, what gives?

Did the purchase go through?

Really? A local news channel posting on their website about a radio host “whining”. Don’t you know how transparent you look? Or, at the very least, unprofessional as a news organization.

I didn’t go to some fancy journalism school, but I know that an opposing opinion at least qualifies as a “story”. That is, if you were an actual reputable news source.

Seems to me that any time a person has a negative opinon about WWAY, they try to make that person look bad. All because they do not agree with what / the way you cover the “news” in our area. Seems that WWAY needs to stop calling the kettle black.
This is just my opinon, so please dont bash me… : ;)

Unfortunately Berger is an empty suit and not smart enough to know Roberts Rules permit him to ask for a roll call vote to make sure his vote is recorded without waiting for those against to be called.

The county commission does not follow Roberts Rules of Order. They make their own policy. If they followed Roberts Rules, Berger’s vote would be recorded as a nay.

Scott, do you really consider this newsworthy? The more newsworthy story here is the land purchase. Why does the 2nd smallest county in the state, with miles of beaches, need ANOTHER park? Especially in a down economy.

Your biases are showing in this “story” and it is not becoming. WWAY is rapidly decending into a total tabloid and this “story” is on par with the one about Commissioner Barfield ironing his shirt.

I don’t blame Ben for sticking up for Brian after the way WWAY has attempted to sensationalize every move he makes. That’s what friends do. Did you actually listen to Ben’s show on Saturday? I did. He did not give Brian a pass for being late to meetings and not showing up Friday morning.

If this site does not tone down its hysterical, shrieking tone I have a feeling that any shred of credibility WWAY has in this very small region will be lost. Stick to the issues and stop trying to CREATE the news.

And bash me all you want, I don’t care.

From the story: “…watching Barfield add another 200 lbs. stuffing greasy bacon in his mouth…”

Mmmmm, bacon.

First of all, the person who wrote this article should’ve put his/her name to it.

Secondly, how about reporting the news objectively? We need to know about our Commisioners being late or away from meetings, but not as a smear because of something said or done to WWAY.

C’mon…there is no winner here and this discredits WWAY in my opinion. I’d like to see 99% factual news, well-written op-eds, and ZERO witless blogging and employee opinion. Not good!

2015 years 9 months ago

and WHO’S personal opinion is this by the way, or are we to assume the organization of WWAY has an opinion? Why are you hiding behind a pseudonym when you are casting stones? I think the Bible has something to say about that, you better re-read your scipture there “WWAY”!

Bash me all you want, WWAY needs to focus on reporting news and not take sides and have open opinions. Sounds like the media will bury anyone they dont like. I dont know much about the above incident, but I see an agency not reporting but bashing…………. Grow up and keep it real.
