WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Local activist Ben McCoy sent the following news release to the local media today, complaining that New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield didn’t ask for a nay vote today on purchasing new land for parks….
“During the New Hanover County Commission meeting Monday morning, one issue garnering a lot of press was that of the purchase of more than 80 acres in the Smith Creek area for parks and amenities for almost $4 million. Several initial reports stated that the vote was unanimously in favor of the expenditure; however, upon close examination, it was noticed that the call for “all those opposed” by Chairman Barfield was apparently never made, and therefore the lone dissenting vote of Brian Berger, was never heard…”
McCoy was also upset about our coverage of Berger being late to a meeting Thursday, AWOL from a meeting Friday, and then again today when we reported that Berger told us he would do an interview at the commissioners meeting but then ran away from our reporter.
Here’s what he had to say….
Bucking for a Pulitzer are we? Great reporting! Especially the witty remark at the end wondering whether Berger is talking about attendance policies – extremely professional. Thank God we have WWAY out there really bringing maturity and relevance to journalism like no other. I have a great idea for a follow up story that would also encourage reader interaction – post a full body shot of Berger, create a little Flash game in which people choose from a variety of clothing, hats, and accessories to dress him up with. Then, write a BREAKING! article about the funniest one, and post the picture, with a headline such as “Berger wears pink bonnet, negligee, and cowboy boots – WWAY exclusive”. That’ll get him good! And you’ll be blazing new trails in respectable journalism – as you have done so well up to this point.
But that’s not all. He also left these two comments the last couple of days….
Give me a break – this wall-to-wall Berger being late coverage is pathetic. Sure he needs to be on time – but you guys are making this like he committed some atrocious crime – how many more people are going to write some pseudo-witty comment about him being mentally challenged? He’s late to meetings so he’s mentally challenged? Give the guy a break – he took the place of Bill Caster who was a monument to the good ol boys way of doing things – Caster could always be counted on to support the status quo – Berger doesn’t fit the mold, so he’s constantly being marginalized and sidelined. The other commissioners don’t want to work with him; don’t respect the will of the people who elected him there – so they pitch fits and scream and yell so that the mindless, feckless media echo chamber will dutifully continue to fight the PR war against him for the sake of the other commissioners. Then brainless morons who are probably still being breastfed and have never accomplished anything in their wretched lives can show up anonymously on the internet and repeat each other’s comments over and over again; pretending to be original, witty, and intelligent.
Berger was tending to a friend who was in a terrible accident – and as of this writing, I don’t even know if he lost his life or not. I know that is no excuse for missing out on watching Barfield add another 200 lbs. stuffing greasy bacon in his mouth, or listening to Thompson insult the school board for daring to ask for more funding – but that’s just the way it is. So suck it.
