COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Christian counselor in Columbus County is charged with second degree murder.

The Sheriff’s Office says Michael Shawn Brown bonded out of jail this afternoon on a $50,000 bond for the death of Larry Townes back in March.

Brown told detectives Townes startled him because he came in Brown’s Christian Counseling Center near Tabor City after hours and tried to rob him, but investigators are exploring other options after they found out Townes was not armed. They are also looking into a fire at the counseling center last month as a possible arson.

There is no evidence that Larry an employee of Shawn was armed or that he was trying to rob him. Larry entered the building at 3:55 pm through an unlocked door for a business that opened at 4:00pm.

The investigation has taken such a long time because “local” boys did not want to arrest Shawn. It took the arson to the building to pull the covers back on the shady schemes that Shawn was trying to pull. Why burn down the building? There is only one reason and that is do destroy evidence.

The SBI became involved that is reason that Shawn will and deservedly so should go to prison.

It will take some hard evidence to convince me that this is nothing more than an overzealous DA’s office trying to make a name for itself. If that wasn’t the case, why did it take 6 weeks to arrest Shawn? Did some new evidence suddenly materialize?

Perhaps there’s no such thing as self defense in Columbus County anymore.

For those who don’t know, Johnnie Beck was convicted by Rex Gore’s antics when he killed that boy who was trying to kill his twin brother Ronnie back in ’95. He spent about 10 years in prison for it. If Shawn isn’t careful, he’ll be in that very same boat.

Lawyer up, Shawn.

Shawn named his center Brown’s Christian Counseling, not the writer of this article. Christians make me laugh with their victimization.

Wonder if the writer would have been so quick to write Muslim, Hindu, or Jewish counselor. It is biased writing like this that makes people hate Christians as a whole.

WWAY are most of the inmates at TABOR CORRECTIONAL PRISON from Tabor City?

2015 years 10 months ago

Yes they are…that’s why the prison was put there…to save on transportation. At least we can give Tabor City credit for something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, they are all over NC. Not for sure of the reason, but I would guess it would be to keep the prisoners in an unfamiliar location due to the possibility of escaping.

Unlike TV, County and State agencies work very well together, ESPECIALLY in a rural county like Columbus. While your perception of reality seems to be steeped in some “Walker Texas Ranger” fantasy or whatever cop shows come on now, the SBI doesn’t come in wagging it’s “authoriti” saying who gets arrested and the County doesn’t cower to the SBI and run off with it’s tail between it’s legs.

Sheriff Batten and the members of his department that I know conduct themselves with integrity on a daily basis. As a Columbus County resident, I do not appreciate your insinuation of wrong doing or “looking the other way” by the Sheriff’s Office. Not knocking the individual agents in the area, but the SBI “ain’t battin’ a thousand” when it comes to evidence handling either. I’d put my money on the local guys anytime.

Were there enough evidence to arrest Mr. Brown on a second degree murder charge at, or immediately following the shooting, I have no doubt that the CCSO would have snatched him up. The suspicion comes from it taking 6 weeks to move forward with an arrest. The DA’s office in Columbus County has a history of sending innocent people to prison. With that in mind, who watches the watcher?

Lastly, it’s no secret that the guy was unarmed. And for the record, if anyone chooses to unlawfully enter my residence WITHOUT a weapon, one WILL be provided for you at no additional charge, prior to the first officer’s arrival.
