WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In a week it will be illegal in North Carolina, but for now bath salts are a popular legal drug getting some folks high, while others believe it’s a new low.

“People are addicted to it,” Dr. Michael Molton, an ER doctor at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, said. “They keep taking it and taking it. It’s cheap. It’s not illegal right now, and it’s something I would just stay away from.”

Molton says in the past month, the ER at NHRMC has been flooded with people trying to get high on bath salts.

“When they first started coming here, we didn’t know exactly what it was, because it’s a new form of drug that we don’t have any testing for,” Dr. Molton said. “They came in acutely psychotic, meaning completely out of touch with reality and just kind of real wacky, completely off the wall, and we couldn’t figure out exactly why, and eventually we traced it down to being the new bath salts.”

Molton says bath salts are a synthetic stimulant with the same effects as drugs like speed or cocaine. The only difference? You can buy bath salts over the counter, and you only have to be 18 years old.

Users snort bath salts like cocaine. Dr. Molton says recently they have seen many college-aged people in the Cape Fear trying the drug, and there are very serious consequences.

“Very similar to high doses of cocaine, high doses of speed, ecstasy, cocaine,” Molton said. “All those stimulants. It has a very high titration, which means some people can take a little bit and they’re not too bad and some people have taken so much they have found them dead and they can die from large ingestions.”

Molton says aside from the immediate side effects of trying this drug, there are more serious issues that could present themselves later in life.

“We just don’t know. We don’t have any long term studies on these drugs that are being manufactured, so I’d say you’re really kind of crazy if you try to take a drug like this,” Molton said.

Bath salts become illegal June 1, but many folks, including Dr. Molton say when this happens, the drug will not go away. It will just get more expensive.

We stopped by some shops in town that sell bath salts. The workers did not want to be on camera, but say they sell high quantities of bath salts every day to many different kinds of people.

Everyone lost a great young lady because of bath salts. She was the smile on her dads face, she was loved by everyone that knew her. She was ….Now she is an angel before her time because of Bath Salts. The young man that put this product for sale, should have to talk to every family that has lost a loved one ,and should be on death row. He knew what he was marketing and he knew the product was deadly. I think he should be forced to do his own product until he overdosed on live TV.This man is a monster and should suffer and die the way my frinds 25yr old daughter did. Sincerely JC

I couldn’t agree more. I was very close to her and her family, and still am close to the family. This was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do was go to my friend’s funeral. This should be a wake up call to everyone. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.

My son is 30 years old.He came across this new drug called bathsalt. He thinks he is dong something good because it is legal for now. He has lost about 75 pounds in the last two months and he looks like a walking sleleton. It breaks my heart to see him. I only see him about once a week and that is when he is so broke down and the paranoia is so bad he feels the only safe place is my home. He always says people are out to get him and his girlfriend but I know this is not true,he is also halucinating very badly. I tried to get him to check himself into the roxey center here in fayetteville but he will have no part of it.As of june 1 it will not be legal but what does that mean? They will package it differently and give it another name and there you have it. I am slowly watching my son kill himself. The people who are selling this stuff need to know that it does kill,I am personally watching it kill my son.I am at a loss of what to do for my son.If anyone has any suggestions please e mail me back.I am open to all suggestions. Thank you and my heart goes out to anyone who has someone they love addicted to this stuff

I had an idea that my daughter was using something, I confirmed tonight from a good friend of hers that it is indeed bath salts.
She is 19, size 2 on a normal day. She has lost at least 20 lbs, she won’t step on a scale and avoids family functions.
Her friend is worried about her as well, but is afraid if she pushes her too hard she will lose her completely.
That’s why she told me.

She’s super paranoid, thinks she has bugs on her and that all of her electronics are being hacked.

I called every place I could think of to ask how I can help.
She’s over 18 and it’s not illegal..yet. Nothing I can do but watch my once bubbly beautiful daughter self distruct.

I saw a guy on salts tonight, he was a carbon copy of a crank addict…He danced around like a clown, funny in a way but truly pitiful…His wife is in a Fed pen and kids are being raised by relaitives…What a live they are missing…He told me tonight about something he could buy on the internet and they ship it to you…Later I heard about the salts, vaguely have heard about it before now, but tonight it was HERE, for REAL…He couldn’t walk without stumbling, but could drive very good, something is wrong with that folks.

You’re just another example of how polluted the human gene pool is. Maybe the ancient Mayans were right about 2012 after all…

Did you mean .16, because .016 is around 5 times less than most DWI/DUI standards? Don’t get me wrong, if your lobbying to have the legal BAC changed to .01, I’m right behind you!! I guess while I’m at it I could ask why a recovering addict is injecting anything much less experimenting with a new drug? Well that all I have, and I have to visit a krispy kreme, I mean I am a “recovering” diabetic you know…..

You hear this person killed these people because of bath salts its just foolish. Guy on river rd didnt hit those people because of bath salts forgot to mention he blew a .016 blood lvl. Crystal didnt die of using bath salts she was a recovering heroin addict that shot up methadone and bath salts together. Methadone and other drugs perscribed are worse than these bath salts

are you freakin nuts, yes it is the people taken this stuff doing it to themselves but, why have something out there on the market that is made from something that makes people wacky, and killers, it is just one more thing that parents are going to have to worry about with their children. I have two small children and an eighteen year old step son and I am freaked out due to the fact that teenagers have a tendency to try things without knowing or thinking about the consequences. So, anyone trying to rationalize bath salt use is out of their mind and maybe has done a few too many drugs themselves. I do agree it is all about how much but why have it out there.

Read the comments by the persons supporting the use of bath salts, and against legislation to ban it. Read the language, and quality of writing. I think that explains enough. Drugs don’t kill people, stupid people who do drugs kill people, and themselves.

It is obvious to me that YOU ARE NOT a parent, or even an adult! If you ever had to watch the effects of this drug on a loved one, you would certainly think differently about it OR ANY OTHER DRUG USE. Your cvomments are totally stupid and you are obviously uneducated about drug use and addiction on ANY kind!
Grow up and become a responsible caring adult—Before it’s too late for you or one of your loved ones!

Well bath salts are for a soothing bath what people do with them is up to them. Gas is for cars why not make that illegal since people huff it. Computer dusters are for cpu’s but people use them to get high why are they still on shelves? Paint is legal correct they get you high, glue also so why no one talking about these items. How many people die drink booze, driving drunk and killing people every minute. This is one more way for the government to control its citizens. Besides bath salts maybe illegal june 1st but there are always loop holes to be found and used.

Herbal Inc. You are an IDIOT. These fake bath salts are not manufactured for bathing, they are manufactured to be used as a drug. Look at the ingredients. Do you see epsom salt or sodium chloride? What you’ll see, if even listed, is: Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV). This is a psychoactive drug with stimulant properties with effects similar to those of cocaine, methylphenidate, and amphetamines. Go to a bath & body store or even a drug store, you don’t have to be 18 to purchase bathing products. Stop trying to fool the public so you can make a quick buck. Your prosperity is coming at the expense of numerous naive adolescents.

My first thought is for the people who have lost loved ones from this and for those who have a loved one who is involved. My heart goes out to you.

My second thought is that people make choices – they can choose to use it or not – although I have no sympathy for the person who created it – he should be prosecuted, and for the places that sell it, shut them down or boycott them and hurt them badly. But again, these people that choose to use it make that decision; yes, I feel sorry for them, but that is their choice. That is not being heartless – it is being realistic. I am sure that nobody is holding them down and sticking it up their noses.

My third thought is that it is amazing that just when you think you have heard it all, a story like this one comes along. I guess there will always be a market for those who choose to live their live dangerously and stupidly and there will always be someone willing to sell stuff to them.

I am 54 years old and it bothers me that I have to sign to buy Nyquil, sudaphedrine or spray paint because somewhere along the line, some idiot has decided that it can be used illegally for a cheap high or to make something illegal.. Their stupidity causes the rest of us that DON’T BREAK THE LAW to have to change our ways and interferes with our freedoms also.

Time to take responsibility for your actions and stay away from the stuff!

Please sign my petition to ban and stop internet growth of bath salts

My nephew overdosed on this crap. He is not a bum. He is an 18 year old kid. Personally, after reading your comments, I’d like to stuff a big dose up your nose and make you snort it, you heartless SOB!

My boyfriend and me have tried the bathsalts as I can tell none of you have. We were addicted to pain pills for 8 years before we heard of these bath salts. We went to a doctor and both got started out on Vicodin 5’s 8 years ago and throughout the years were given higher and higer doses till we were on the Perc 15s and 30s. With both of us on the drug and doing more and more by the week we eventually starting running out of our pills and then we started purchesing them. With a 100-150 dollar a day habit we knew something needed to change so we tried to get help but even though the doctors took our insurance to give us this addiction they would not accept it to help us get away from the addiction. WE heard of bath salts from a friend and we tried it then out habit went to 20 dollars a day. WE both were ok all day with one bottle or packet so we were not spending as much money. Then one day I found my boyfriend and he wouldnt wake up and was really sweaty and breathing funny I called 911 and when they got there they said his sugar was 27. I imeddiatly thought it was the BS so when I got to the hospital I told them about the BS usage. He was in a coma for a few days and phycotic when he did awaken. I always thought it was the bathsalts 2 weeks later he was a little better he wasnt phycotic he was eating and drinking on his own with thickeners and he was breathing right. They wanted to put him in a nursing home for therypy but he wanted to come home and since I love him had been caring for him and I am a STNA I took him home. When we first came home I had to help him eat drink and his voice is really low. (also the doctors said he will never be the same). We have been home for 3 weeks and my boyfriend is perfectly normal. I asked him one day do you remember anythign before the hospital? and he said yeah babe the last thing I remember is takign your dads headache pills for my headache I asked him to show me which bottle and he showed me the bottle. I read it and it was my dads medicine that was for his DIABETES. Which explained why his sugar was 27 and after reasearch your sugar dropping that low will cause the same affects that I watched him got through… Just think you may think it is BS and it may be but it could be something totally different these doctors need to test for every known drug that is found in the urine and blood before thinking it is bath salts just cause someone says hey I know he took bath salts if they would have done that for my boyfriend they could have treated him faster instead of just looking at him like damn he is a druggie he is a lost cause

2015 years 9 months ago

Yeah…druggies and alcoholic bums serve such a great purpose in life, right?

We’re actually cutting services to mentally retarded children and adults because we spend so much money on druggies and alkies.

Let them die and invest the money where it will help people who are debilitated through no fault of their own.

(BTW, we’re not raising taxes to help druggies and alkies, either. Their self-destructive behavior indicates they want to die, so let’s just help them along.)

If they come in because of drug or alcohol overdose, LET THEM DIE. They are obviously worthless trash and society will be better off without them.

Just turn them away. “I’m sorry sir, but we don’t treat self-inflicted stupidity. Goodbye and good luck.”
