WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Crimefighters from all over southeastern North Carolina are now more prepared to defend our area against cybercrimes.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation met with officers today to talk about a growing problem: crimes via the World Wide Web.
Wilmington Police Cpl. Bobby Benton is a detective and runs the computer forensic lab. He said a lot of police work is “old school,” but it’s important to stay up-to-date, because criminals and crimes are changing.
“You would not let a stranger come in your house. You lock your doors at nighttime before you go to bed, set your alarms, but yet we let our kids get on a computer that opens up a doorway to any and everybody that’s out there,” Benton said. “We need to be knowledgeable in how to protect them.”
Benton said computer crimes are not limited to children. Cybercriminals can go after your identity and your checkbook.
