WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The unofficial start to summer also means the heart of boating season along our coast.

Wrightsville Beach was packed today as boaters hit the water. After getting their boats in the water, they spent their day sailing around, fishing and catching up with friends.

Boaters say despite high gas prices, this Memorial Day weekend was much busier than past years. Seasoned boaters claim their relaxing weekend turned chaotic thanks to big numbers on the water.

“Maybe 60, 70 boats, but it’s pretty packed,” boater Chris Becherer said. “Maybe 30 boats coming in and out of the channel at the same time, which is pretty stressful.”

Becherer says he hopes the rest of the season is not nearly as crowded as this holiday weekend.

It’s pointless, but it makes me happy that I invest in oil and gasoline.
