MANTEO, NC (AP) — A wildfire in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has burned more than 27,000 acres in Dare County.

The North Carolina Forest Service said Tuesday the blaze is 80 percent contained. Brush and other materials in the containment area continue to fuel the blaze. Solid lines of burning organic soil are also reported.

Officials say the community of Stumpy Point remains at risk. No evacuations have been ordered but officials are monitoring the situation.

The fire was reported May 5 and was probably sparked by lightning.

Some 230 firefighters are working on the blaze, using 12 tractor and plow units, six fire engines and four helicopters.
