HOPE MILLS,NC (WWAY) — South View High School has named Trelonnie Ownes its new assistant varsity basketball coach. Owens will serve under South View varsity coach Nathan Faulk who previously coached at South Columbus. Prior to South Columbus Faulk assisted Fred Lynch at Laney High School in Wilmington.

Trelonnie Owens graduated from Bladenboro High School. He led the Bulldogs to the state 1-A title in 1990 and was named player of the year by the NCHSAA. Owens played collegiately at Wake Forest. He even had a productive professional career playing professional basketball. Most of his pro years were spent in South America.

At Bladenboro High School Trelonnie’s friends called him “Tree” because he took up a lot of space on the basketball court. Bladenbro High is no longer a high school, nor are any of the schools that made up the Southern 8 Conference. Here’s a list of the teams Bladenboro played twice each season during the Trelonnie Owens era: Acme-Delco, Clarkton, Hallsboro, Nakina, Tabor City, Tar Heel and Williams Township. Some people around Bladen County and Columbus still say, “those were the days.”
