WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The smoke that’s filling our air is not from a fire in our area. Instead it’s from a wildfire up the coast in Dare County.

According to Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner, there was a small illegal burn in Brunswick County this morning, but it was quickly put out. It caused no damages or injuries and covered 10 to 15 acres.

Garner said he plans to send a small plane up to make sure no fires sparked from Sunday night’s lightning strikes, but for now, everything is under control.

The smoke in the air around much of our area is from the fire at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. It’s been burning since May 5.
