THIS INFORMATION FROM A NEWS RELEASE SENT TO THE WWAY NEWSCHANNEL 3 NEWSROOM

RALEIGH, NC (NCDPH) -- The NC Division of Public Health is conducting a public health assessment for the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation National Priorities List site in Navassa, Brunswick County. The final draft report is available for public review and comment through July 25.

The Kerr-McGee site was a creosote-based wood treating facility under three different owners from 1936 through 1974. The site has not been in use since 1980 when Kerr-McGee dismantled equipment, buildings and storage tanks. Creosote residuals remain in the soils, groundwater and sediments on the site, and in the sediments of the adjoining wetlands and Sturgeon Creek.

A public health assessment analyzes information about harmful substances at a site and evaluates whether exposure to those substances might cause harm to people. The information for this assessment comes from agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the NC Department of Transportation, the NC Department of the Environment and Natural Resources, and the Kerr-McGee Corporation. The data evaluated for this site was obtained from 1988-2005. Additional environmental investigations are taking place at the site. The Division of Public Health will continue to evaluate new information as it becomes available.

Representatives from the NC Division of Public Health are planning a public availability session in the summer to discuss the findings with the community.

The report will be available at:
Leland Library
487 Village Road, Leland NC
Or on the web at: http://www.epi.state.nc.us/epi/oee/hace/ncmap/CountyInfo.html#Brunswick

Written comments on the report may be directed to the NC Division of Public Health’s Health Assessment, Consultation and Education (HACE) Program by mail, fax, or e-mail.
