WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We are learning more about what led to the arrest of New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger last week. The one person people want to hear from, other than Berger, is the alleged victim Heather Blaylock. Blaylock went on the Big Talker FM Saturday to tell her side of the story.

“If this was just Joe Schmoe down the street having a fight, I don’t think it would have had the same result as Brian Berger the county commissioner and his girlfriend having a fight,” Blaylock said.

Blaylock finally broke her silence on the Big Talker Saturday afternoon. In an interview, Blaylock gave her side of what happened between her and the commissioner.

“We just got into an argument and things got heated, and it was making me uncomfortable,” she said. “He never actually touched me physically, but it got to the point where I just wanted some third person to be there.”

Blaylock said she thinks Berger may have accidentally thrown out her things, but that’s not what she originally thought.

“The box that was on the curb had a lot of trash all sitting on top, but then at the very bottom of the box was some of my things, like some Christmas ornaments and my son’s baby blanket,” Blaylock said. “There was that in there, but it was at the bottom of the box. And when I asked him, ‘Were you gonna throw this away and not tell me?’ He was like, ‘I wasn’t throwing it away’. I was like, ‘Well, it was on the curb.'”

Blaylock says she has been abused in past relationships, which is why she says she thinks she overreacted to this situation.

“I’ve had abusive relationships before Brian, so I still kind of have this thing in my brain where I get a little scared sometimes, and I saw him walking toward me, and he looked really mad. I was like, ‘I’m gonna get out of here, and we’ll cool off and talk about this later,'” she said.

When she left, she told police that Berger tore off a door handle from her car. She later said she thought he just did not want her to leave.

“I don’t know if he was grabbing it,” she said. “I think it was maybe more he didn’t want me to leave, and the door handle came off in his hand.”

Blaylock says she does not think fights like this are uncommon when you love someone.

“Our fights are things a lot of couples go through,” Blaylock said. “Some fights are more severe than others, but the fact is, when you’re with someone you love, then you have these rough fights, and you move on. If you truly love somebody, you will work it out and move on.”

Blaylock, who described Berger as a “sweet guy,” says she does not trust the media to tell an accurate story. She also said she would repeat everything she said on the big talker in a court of law. Berger is scheduled to be back in court July 19.
