Local fund raiser for Joplin tornado victims

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Did you ever just have an idea and decide to act on it? Jade Kassis did, when watching TV about the tornadoes that hit Joplin Missouri. Kassis decided she had to help.

Kassis had never been to Joplin, but her heart went out to the people there. She started asking for donations right away. She works at Hell's Kitchen downtown, so she figured she would just get vendors to donate prizes to raffle and auction and invite all of her friends to show up. Sometimes simple ideas are the best.

"I just watch the news a lot, and I felt bad for the people," Kassis said. "I heard a lot of the family stories how they didn't think they would make it through the tornado, and I just wanted to help in any way that I possibly could."

And so she did. Kassis's homemade fundraiser already raised several hundred dollars before the event Wednesday night, and with Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 televised at the bar, it looks to be a very good night.

When she wraps up, all of the money raised will be presented to the Red Cross.

So very proud of you Miss

So very proud of you Miss Kassis. Went through Joplin last week. Until you see it in person you don't really understand the scope of the devastation. Yes, help others too. Miss Kassis decided to take one step....don't rain on her parade.

What about the tornado

What about the tornado victims in North Carolina?

Do you have any concept of "relative scale?"

One-third of Joplin buildings and infrastructure simply vanished. The death toll went above 150.

I dont know, maybe you

I dont know, maybe you should help them.....
