RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina General Assembly is trying to wrap up most of its work for the year, its first under Republican rule in more than a century.

House and Senate GOP leaders said they’re aiming to complete their regular annual session by early Friday morning, although that depends on what legislation they consider during the day Thursday.

The House can give final legislative approval to bills requiring voters show photo identification and giving tax credits to parents of special needs students attending private or home schools.

Lawmakers also may debate legislation to repeal a 2009 law giving death-row prisoners a new avenue to challenge their sentences on racial bias.

The Legislature will return in July for redistricting.
