RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The first drawings are out for North
Carolina state House and Senate district boundaries for the next
decade.
The Republican chairmen of the Legislature’s redistricting
committees released Friday proposed maps for about one-quarter of
the General Assembly’s 170 seats. Most of them are designed to
create an environment whereby minority voters can elect the
candidates of their choice, in keeping with federal voting laws.
The drafted House districts would appear to place Democratic
Reps. Michael Wray of Northampton County and Annie Mobley of
Hertford County in the same district. A Senate district in Forsyth
County also would place incumbent Democrat Linda Garrou into
another district.
A public hearing on the proposal will be held Thursday. The
General Assembly will vote on complete legislative and
congressional maps next month.
