BETHESDA, MD (GOLF.COM) — NBC Sports apologized for editing out the phrase “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance in its introduction to the broadcast of Round 4 of the U.S. Open on Sunday.

The omission caused an immediate outcry on Twitter, with at least one post suggesting that people boycott NBC advertisers over the video introduction, which cut between children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and U.S. soldiers raising an American flag on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

NBC Sports announcer Dan Hicks apologized for the omission later in the broadcast.

“Earlier we began our coverage of this final round just about three hours ago, and when we did it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation’s capital for the third time. Regrettably a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone and we’d like to apologize to those of you that were offended by it.”

I don’t feel that this was just a “mistake” or that it should be dismissed by just an apology. An apology just gets someone off the easy way and then we are supposed to forget about the error. It is a big deal to omit the “under God” from the pledge. Don’t trample on my rights to have it in the pledge, just because a few jokers out there don’t want it in. I believe this country is supposed to be run on the majority opinion, not because “someone” at NBC made a decision. Not a great way to try to keep your standings high NBC.

I was at church all day Sunday worshiping the lord, so I had not noticed what was or wasn’t on TV.

  • Mary in Florida says:

NBC said it was an error! With all the horrible things going on in this country and the world in general, it seems a bit over the top to organize a boycott because of this! Perhaps if God chose to speak to some of you directly he might say “get a life”.

  • Guest1 says:

The In God We Trust has already been taken off some of our money. Shame on them for failing to acknowledge our faith in what our forefathers thought was important enough to use on our currency.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

“NBC said it was an error!” Do you believe everything you are told? With all the horrible things going on in this country and the world in general, it seems a bit over the top that you would take time to post on a subject such as this. Shouldn’t you be out saving the world from all these horrible things? Perhaps if God chose to speak to you directly he might say “Mary please mind your own buisness”.

Another example of left leaning Liberal views. The main reason I do not watch Brian Williams, or anything political on this network. They are a prime example of liberal views overwhelming any sense of just reporting the facts. They exclude what management hates, patriotism, God, and the American way. What a national disgrace this network has become. Avoid them, email their advertisers about their support of travacy in America!

  • Grand Ole Party says:

As a matter of fact he does have better things to do, we are talking about it as I type.

  • Mary in Florida says:

Sorry,Grand Ole Party! I had forgotten that God spoke only to Republicans! Hopefully He has better things to do than worrying about the Pledge of Allegiance, or even the vitriolic postings on this website.

Indifference like yours is the reason prayer was taken out of the schools in the first place. It started with the schools, then moved on to the Ten Commandments being taken out of courtrooms, and now it’s moving on to removing it from the Pledge of Allegiance. I hear there is also talk of removing “In God We Trust” from our currency.

One day, you won’t even remember that this country was founded on a belief in God by our forefathers. Nice going.

  • Guest12 says:

It has NOTHING to do with religious mindset or principals…

But it has EVERYTHING to do with the foundation upon which this country was built. Take away the foundation and the house will fall and fail. This country is well on its way to falling and failing already.
If you think it makes no difference then maybe you should go back just within the past 60 years or so and see how fast this Country has gone down hill. Start with:

    1. Taking prayer out of school

    2. Removing the ten commandments

Then in another twenty or thirty years or so, look back and see the difference between the “One nation, UNDER GOD” and the “One nation” America…then try to explain to your grandchildren that people like you who though that it was no big deal and that people needed to just “chill out” are the reason they live in a socialist society.

Have a great day Guest666 and enjoy leaving post on here while you still can….you know before the government takes away our freedom of speech too. But you probably won’t even realize when it happens…’cause you’ll just be “chilling out”.

  • Guest666 says:

Here we go with another urinating contest between the believers and non-believers. God is in the hearts of mankind. It makes no difference if it is left out of the Pledge of Allegiance, taken off our money, removed from the walls of court rooms…nothing can remove it from those who truly believe in a higher power. Seems like there are those who are so super-sensitive that anything that goes against their personal beliefs is fodder for controversy. Chill out!

  • Guestnogod says:

Gosh I am offended by your comment Mr. Christian. Shame on NBC for apologizing. They should wear secularism like a badge of honor !!!

  • Ray says:

Oh Really !!!/! Screw watching them..

  • Guest26 says:

This country has come along way my friend, for the better I might add. If you want to go back to the past build a flippin time machine and go. the past has slavery, segregation, no women’s rights, war against brothers. We still have a long way to go and the process is slow. but I am proud to live in this country, taking away prayer and the ten commandments is an achievement really. Not everyone believes in christianity and there is no reason to force it upon everyone else.

    1892 to 1923
“I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

    1923 to 1924
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States and to the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

    1924 to 1954
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

    1954 to Present
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

  • GuestLee says:

Do you really have your eyes so closed that you can’t see the truth when it’s staring you in the face? This country has come a long way…for the better???? Seriously??? I have news for you; there is still slavery, segregation, poor women’s rights, and war against brothers.

I love my country, but this country used to have people who cared about each other, and communities who helped to raise each other’s children. The worst offense in school was throwing spitballs at the blackboard, and drugs weren’t prevalent throughout the schools. Kids were respectful to their elders, and we didn’t have children killing children and pedophiles killing children. We were respectful, our word was our bond, and we didn’t have to lock our doors. You say there is no reason to force Christianity upon everyone else, but I say there is no reason to force UNbelievers on everyone else either. Why should your rights take precedence over mine?

Open your eyes, really look at the world around you, and you’ll see how much worse this country has gotten since prayer and the Ten Commandments were taken away.

I love my country, but I’m afraid for it’s future. You should be too.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

So you sincerely believe that only Christians pray and follow the Ten Commandments?

Okay, let’s tackle the latter, first. Jews certainly believe in and accept the Ten Commandments. Muslims have every one of the Ten Commandments reflected in the teaching of the Koran; they are not lain out 1,2,3.., but they’re all there.

As far as praying, we have to include many beyond Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Hindus pray. Sikhs pray. Shitoists pray. Krishnas pray.

Buddhists don’t pray, per se, as they don’t believe in a specific God, but it is interesting to note that they do embrace teachings that represent six of the Ten Commandments.

So in closing, it is quite plain to see that if you think abandoning prayer and the Ten Commandments is good, about ninety percent of the world thinks you’re an idiot….but as long as you think you’re cool, I guess that’s all that matters.

  • Guest 2011 says:

I want NBC to fire the person who “accidently” left out those words TWICE! This was not an accident – come on people – do what is right and let’s get on with making our country strong, safe, secure, and INTELLIGENT!! As a teacher in the NHCS system, our students, teachers, staff, and any parents in the building would recite the pledge every morning before classes began. That is how I was brought up, and that is why I insisted that my own children be respectful. The students in the video recited the pledge correctly – the editor took it upon himself to edit the words out TWICE – could have been done so much better —– even I can do that —–. This person did not have the right to do this and his supervisor should have caught it before it was televised.

  • Guest99x says:

Baloney, “under God” was edited out so as to not upset those offended by us who are people of faith, the Christian faith.

Who, in the NBC organization was responsible for this call? I’m willing to bet that it wasn’t a Muslim, Jew, Mormon or Bhuddist… it was a self-hating Christian.

This “editor” should be fired forthwith.

  • Bruce Boettger says:

I am writing to express my displeasure w/ the omission of “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening of your coverage. It is with great difficulty that I accept your apology as I am not convinced this omission was an error, but rather a politically motivated statement by NBC. What are you thinking?
I have boycotted NBC ever since Tom Brokow retired and Tim Russert passed, but not I will expand my boycot to include your sponsers.
My son serves in the Air Force and has been deployed seven times to the mid-East defending this great nation. You cannot believe how hurtful actions like these are to the families of all those patriotic Americans who defend this proud flag and pledge allegiance to it!

  • Guest99x says:

Guest no god…. well, ok, you’re absolutely entitled to deny the belief in anything, be it God, Mithra, Buddah or for that matter, ANYTHING. Here’s the problem: NBC was filming a public event, where members of the public were reciting as an element of the “Pledge”, “…one Nation under God” and it was edited out.

    This is manipulative false reporting.

  • Guest87 says:

It wasn’t the public at the public event that was edited, it was kids in a classroom. Don’t go thinking I’m sticking up for NBC, I’m just keeping the facts straight.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

How do you know he is a Christian? Really we have no doubt you are offended. Seems like you cupcakes are offended by everything these days.

  • Angelo123 says:

NBC, Who the hell do you people think you are! Why would you try something like this. We, as a united people could push you off the air and I hope we do! You showed your colors and they are not RED< WHITE, & BLUE. Those that advertise on NBC you better leave them because the citizens of this country have no respect for NBC & if you continue to advertise on their network we will have no respect for you!!!!!!!! Major, Major mistake NBC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gary Pittman says:

This is why ABC and the rest of the NBC’s etc are losing their audience

  • Patriot Games says:

I was offended then and I am still offended that NBC would allow an editor to make a decision to alter the pledge of allegiance. The fact that this person was allowed to leave this potion of the pledge on the cutting room floor should make it easy for NBC to leave that persons final paycheck laying on the cutting room floor next to the edited portion!!

  • brenda munnerlyn says:

I was very offended by your omission of “under God” during your patriotic segment. Do you think the American people are so dumb that we wouldn’t notice that??? I will do my best not to watch your programming again and will boycott your sponsors.

  • alfred says:

Not only will I not watch NBC I will also e-mail the sponsers and let them know I will not buy their products!

  • Cindy says:

I think everyone needs to boycott NBC, I never watch it.
