RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A federal agency is beginning a survey of diseases that may be related to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, where officials believe as many as 1 million people might have been exposed to toxins.

The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry will send a survey to more than 300,000 people who lived or worked at Camp Lejeune or Camp Pendleton, CA, before 1986. The Camp Pendleton responses will be used to compare to the ones from Camp Lejeune.

The survey will be mailed Thursday to about 26,000 people. It will ask people about where they lived and worked and about their family history.

The survey is a response to a congressional mandate and is the largest survey the agency has ever conducted.
