WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Team camp is one of the long standing traditions of the campus of UNC Wilmington. For the second year in a row the camp falls under the umbrella of UNCW head coach Buzz Peterson. 60 high school baskeball teams are competing. It’s an all day affair with action from 8am until midnight. “They play three or four games a day for a couple of days,” Peterson said. “I imagine once they go back to the dorms they’re sound asleep after all that basketball.
For Buzz Peterson this is a great way to get student athletes on the UNCW campus. “I enjoy it. It’s fun. I see a lot of the players come in and it gives us a chance to evaluate on our own floor,” Peterson said.
The players aren’t the only ones being watched this week at Trask Coliseum. It’s also a training ground for the referees. The Tommy Maddocks referee camps is held in conjunction with team camp because there’s always a need to develop younger officials.
