WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A series of public hearings are underway across the state on new legislative districts for North Carolina.

UNCW’s Education Building Room 266 is the host of the one of the sites as Republicans try to redraw state House and Senate and Congressional district boundaries.

The proposed maps have drawn some criticism. Opponents say the leadership is trying to pack the districts with black voters to help Republican candidates in surrounding districts.

Many at the video-conference hearing here in Wilmington say the maps just don’t make sense geographically.

“I appreciate the efforts the lawmakers have done, but it’s time to go back to the drawing board and keep with history, the supreme court, and No. 3 is plain logic. You know your neighbors best, and you have a common interest,” Owen Wexler of Wilmington said.

The meeting continues until 9 p.m. We’ll have a recap tonight on WWAY NewsChannel 3 at 11.
