WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you didn’t know Wilmington had a rugby team, then you are probably surprised to know we have a rugby tournament, too.
It is not a new thing. The Cape Fear Sevens Tournament is in its 37th year.
Rugby is a sport that matches speed and strength and is the forerunner of modern football. The tournament includes both men and women.
“Sevens is like full-contact, high-speed basketball,” Tournament Director Ray Funderburk said. “It has two seven-minute halves, seven men on a team, and you play on a full-size field, so there is a lot of space to cover, not much time. There is one referee. It goes by really quickly but there is a lot of action.”
The Cape Fear Sevens Tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Ogden Park. If you are looking for adventure you can enter. It is not for the faint of heart, though. This is full contact.
