WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington bakery was targeted in a statewide phone scam. Hot Pink Cake Stand on Front Street reported receiving several phone calls Wednesday from a TTY operator.

TTY is a service used to aid hearing impaired people when using the phone.

According to employees, the caller claimed to be a regular customer, whose car broke down near the store and needed money to pay a mechanic. He asked for $23.

Employee Jenny Hilton said the caller was repetitive, and she knew something wasn’t right.

“I was just frustrated at that point,” Hilton said. “I was like, ‘Dude, what is going on here?’ It just seemed so random and completely unbelievable. I was like, what is happening? So, it’s just sort of frustrating.”

The Attorney General’s office says there have been similar TTY scams targeting small businesses and restaurants in Raleigh.

If your business has been a victim of a telemarketing scam, you can file a complaint with the NC Department of Justice by calling (877) 5-NO-SCAM or online at http://www.ncdoj.com.
