FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — Our area is rich with history, and Fort Fisher is a favorite spot for many locals, visitors and historians.

The Civil War site held a “Second Saturday” event, which showcased Fort Fisher’s literary legacy. Authors who specialize in Civil War writing set up shop at Fort Fisher for the day to talk about their fiction and non-fiction books and also to sign copies of their work.

Jack Travis has written a book about Major James Reilly, a man he believes to be one of the greatest battery leaders in the war. He’s fascinated with the Civil War and says it’s a part of history that everyone should know about.

“This is absolutely, unequivocally what brought the United States together,” Travis said. “The war had to be fought to make us a united country. It was a bloody war, 630,000 men were killed. Both sides fought for what they believed was correct and right. We have to know this history so we understand the history of our country and the foundation of our country.”

Fort Fisher’s “Second Saturdays” continues next month on August 13 with an emphasis on music.
