BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — If you’ve traveled Highway 17 in Brunswick County recently, you’ve probably noticed a new hospital near Bolivia.
On July 31, the Brunswick Novant Medical Center opens for the treatment of patients. This $107,000,000 hospital replaces the Brunswick Community Hospital which is 40 years old and dated. It features an expanded emergency department, an improved maternity center, and flat screen televisions in private rooms.
“We have the technology, the newer equipment, and the ability to cardiac monitor more patients than we currently are able to at our facility,” said Brunswick Novant Medical Center President Denise Mihal. “It’s just going to be easier to practice medicine here.”
This hospital is more than triple the size of the old one. It also has 78 total beds and was built to expand, if necessary, to 250 beds.
“We do feel the excitement level. When you’re out in the community people are always asking about it, they’re excited for the move day,” said Brunswick Novant Medical Center Senior Director of Operations Shelbourn Stevens. “The emergency department will close at the existing hospital at 6 a.m. and the emergency department here will open at 6 a.m., so I’m sure that we will have a lot of patients that will come and see us on the 31st.”
The hospital will also add positions in security, nursing and radiology and as volume increases more staff will also be added.
Officials hope the public is satisfied with its newest hospital.
“It is absolutely a magnificent structure and I hope that the community is proud of our efforts and that we’ve met expectations because that was our goal all along, to meet our patients and the community’s expectations. You have the trust and the faith in us to deliver and we hope we have,” said Mihal.
This Saturday, the Brunswick Novant Medical Center will be hosting a community event from 1-4 p.m. There will be a ribbon cutting and self-guided tours of the new facility.
