WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Charlotte would have passed Wilmington in the USL standings with a win on Saturday night at Legion Stadium, but that didn’t happen. The Wilmington Hammerheads jumped on Charlotte early. The home team never looked back. Wilmington shutout Charlotte 3-0.

Make sure you check out Sunday’s Coach’s Corner. We’ll have game highlights and postgame reaction from Wilmington’s win over Charlotte. The Coach’s Corner airs at 6pm on Sunday.

For the first time this season Wilmington wore pink uniforms. Maybe that’s all they needed to get back on track. The players wore pink jerseys in support of the Medical Center Foundation’s Pink Ribbon Project and early detection and awareness of breast cancer.

Below is the news release that the Hammerheads sent out shortly after the game:

The Wilmington Hammerheads avenged a Friday night loss in their second back-to-back match against the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday night as they prevailed, 3-0, in front of a crowd of 3,533 at Legion Stadium.

The Hammerheads (10-6-3) earned three points for the win and now hold 33 points in the league. Meanwhile, the Eagles maintained 28 points, but dropped their record to 8-7-4.

Just eight minutes into the first half Wilmington captured the lead when midfielder Manny Guzman sent a fast cross to Hammerhead leading scorer, Luke Mulholland, who put away his seventh goal of the season.

In the 31st minute, the Hammerheads were given a free kick just outside the top of the 18-yard box. Midfielder Andryi Budnyy would not let the opportunity pass the Hammerheads by as he drilled a shot past a diving Charlotte goalkeeper, Eric Reed, pushing the margin to 2-0. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Minutes later, a confident Brock Duckworth, who finished with three saves, rushed off his line to meet Eagles midfielder Diego Martins, one-on-one, and came away with a save for Wilmington as they carried a 2-0 lead into intermission.

After the halftime break, the Hammerheads kept the momentum flowing in the 46th minute when midfielder Tanner Wolfe made his scoring debut of the season with a diving header off a shot by Mulholland, which ricocheted off the crossbar.

Next Friday, July 29, the Hammerheads will travel to New York to face the FC New York at Belson Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off. The Charlotte Eagles will return home and play to host the Rochester Rhinos on Friday at 7 p.m.
