ROCKY POINT, NC (WWAY)– As the weather this summer continues to heat up, wildfires are becoming more and more prevalent. This is the case especially in Pender County as fires Friday caused evacuations off Harrison Creek Road.

The two fires were contained around mid-day Friday but winds pushed the flames past containment lines and near Harrison Creek Road.

According to Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins, the fire got to within 1/4 of a mile from homes.

Over 30 residences were evacuated and taken to Island Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

“We are constantly running from fire,” said Harrison Creek Road resident Lorenzo Marshall. “I don’t know why they (fires) love us out here so much but they’re trying to burn us out.”

Resources from the Juniper Road Fire are assisting in fighting the flames.

According to firefighters the fires are currently contained at a combined 80 acres.
