NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Folks in New Hanover County were talking trash Tuesday night. The first of three town hall meetings was held today to discuss New Hanover County's proposed plan for the future of waste collection. Though the proposed recommendation would include new services like curbside recycling, some residents say there's no reason to change the current system.

Folks lined up to show their opposition to the counties' proposed recommendation for the future of trash pick-up. The plan includes curbside recycling, yard waste removal and bulky item pick up, services that some say they don't need.

“I have very little yard waste,” said Don Lewis, who lives in New Hanover County. “If I need to haul something off, I can haul it off myself. I do recycle but I don't need a recycle bin.”

County manager, Bruce Shell says citizens do have a choice to opt out and not pay for the trash collection services. Lewis says he doesn't appreciate the county making it an all or nothing issue.

“All I need is for my trash to be picked up, but yet, I’ve got to pay for all for services regardless of whether I want to use them or not,” said Lewis.

The recommendation calls for dividing the county into two zones, only allowing two haulers to pick up the trash. Many say that would hurt small businesses.

“Your smaller trash haulers, they would be out of business simply because they do not have the finances to be able to bid,” said Lewis.

Shell says the county is mostly concerned with providing a more efficient way to pick up the garbage.

“From the free enterprise system, the county is not looking to get into the collection business other than to bid it out so we can get a level of service for our citizens,” said Shell.

Shell stressed that the county only intends to go through with the proposed plan if the services can be provided at a competitive cost.

There will be two more town hall meetings. One will be held Wednesday, July 27 at Myrtle Grove Elementary School and the other Thursday, July 28 at Laney High School. Both will start at 6 p.m.

I thought it was an orderly

I thought it was an orderly meeing until Jason Thompson reacted to the remarks of those in attendance who voiced their opinion re the Counties plan. The Commissioners said they invited the citizens to solicit their opinion. Jason Thompson reacted as thought he was personally being attacked by the opinions. I wonder how long Mr. Thompson would keep his day job if he reacted that way towards his clients. Makes me wonder how sincere the Commissioners are if that is the way they react when they get the feedback they claim they want..

When this is all said and

When this is all said and done there will be know more open burning of yard waste just like the city of Wilmington

...and that's when we follow in the footsteps of Ghandi and King

They can't arrest everyone.

Garbage Removal

These guys were fantastic overseers of the corrupt ABC, planners of/land speculators in toll bridges to Leland, builders of convention centers that local businesses can't access, unsuccessful seekers of hotel proprietors, creators of the financially challenged CFPUA, wooers of foreign toxic spewing cement manufacturers...and in keeping with their stellar record, they now want to get involved in controlling the trash collection in the county. Here's a suggestion, work on a plan that will allow your citizens to recall the garbage that calls itself our County Commissioners. The voters of New Hanover County have some representatives that need to be left at the curb. (This is about as nice as I could be.)

Can we impeach every one of

Can we impeach every one of them before the next election. PLEASE. Does Ricky Meeks had brothers, sisters, cousins, that we could elect to fill these seats? The whole dang lot of them are self-serving tyrants. Their end in office cannot come quickly enough.

Trash

I had never heard of Jason Thompson until last nights meeting. All I can say is he a nasty arrogant little man. He has made up his mind and plans to force this on us like it or not. The only way we can make it backfire on them is for a large number of people to opt out and start to burn our trash.

Are you new here?

Thompson is the brat that acts like a child when he doesn't get his way. He stomps his feet and threatens to beat other politicians. He is doing us the disservice by not running again so we can see how badly he would be defeated. The upside is he will no longer have any voice in local policy.

Right-on

Your comments about Mr. Thompson are right on the money. He did the same thing when he decided he wanted to rid the county of volunteer fire departments. This trash thing is a scam between the county and a couple of high dollar trash services that are lining the pockets of lawmakers.

Trash Service

no when Jason gets away from the being a County Commissioner, he will be in the Trash Business, and getting that money from the County too, just wait and see. Someone should ask him and Bruce Shell, what happened at Smith Creek Park, who paid the tab on that? fixing all that was wrong out there after Jason's business partners left that mess for the County.
The real truth.

That's the LAST thing we want the county to be concerned with!

"Shell says the county is mostly concerned with providing a more efficient way to pick up the garbage."

"Efficiency" and "county government" referenced in the same sentence? Are you kidding? That's like saying a square wheel is "more efficient" than a round one. Geeez...

There's a big, fat pile of money going into a "favored one's" pocket with this horsecrap! A blind person can smell that!

Umm..

I DON'T WANT THE COUNTY MEDDLING IN MY TRASH PICK-UP!!! PLEASE mind your own business! My level of service is FINE just the way it is now! Why in the WORLD would they try to push out the little guy here? They are MUCH cheaper right now than the two main haulers in NHC...JUST what we need...MORE government!

Yes, let's return to the Nineteenth Century

Anyone who has read "The First Tycoon" by T.J. Stiles knows of the incredible harm done to the East coast riverine and intracoastal shipping industry by the assignments of exclusive monopolies two hundred years ago.

Bruce Shell obviously has no historical perspective on the danger of such monopolies. They completely eliminate competition and competitive pricing, allow the flagrant abuse of customers by their mandated service provider, and open the door to corruption within government as companies jockey to win that monopoly. (Trust me, the last thing THIS county needs is yet another appearance of impropriety.)

On the most basic of levels, they deny the customer a choice. You no longer have the freedom to choose your own trash hauler. Tyrannical government bureaucrats know what is best for you; you don't.

If you'd like some perspective on exclusive monopolies, try to remember AT&T pre-1984....what it cost to call your sister in Arizona....how you could only connect THEIR equipment that they rented to you.....and how, even if you lived in an old neighborhood with old, noisy, weak telephone lines, you HAD to use their service. There simply was no other option.

Mister Shell, I sincerely believe that in addition to having no historical knowledge and no respect for the free enterprise system whatsoever, you are confused on the role of government and have little grasp on the reality of trash collection in the county as it presently exists. I know of no one who has a problem with the "level of service" regarding trash collection....

...but there's nothing like creating a problem where none exists, eh?

What is the old saying?

People tremble with fear when they hear the phrase "I'm from the government and I'm here to help." Or we could go with "Don't fix what isn't broken."
Cable companies had the market locked down until satellite companies figured out there was a whole market that was tired of the poor service and regular price increases. It used to be the only people that used satellite service were those that lived out in the country. Now look at all the dishes in town. Everybody wins with competition, except for the government.

County Trash Plan

Citizens of New Hanover County, hear this now, if the County is trying to give you something, they are getting ready to screw all of you. It will be just like the Water & Sewer.
