BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Seventeen workers are trying to figure out what they’ll do next after a fire yesterday in Burgaw. The fire at Coastal Instruments and Electronics caused the roof to collapse.
Clean-up crews are trying to salvage anything that wasn’t destroyed in the.
“Right now our plan is to get out of the building what is salvageable that we can use to rebuild the facility and get started back up again,” president Bob Williams said.
The fire started around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Emergency crews worked for hours to put it out.
“The cause is under investigation, but the origin is back to a room where there was some gas,” Burgaw Fire Administrator Bill George said.
Williams believes the fire was caused by a hydrogen leak.
“We turned the hydrogen off, but by the time we got it off, the fire had gone into the attic of the building and basically burned the roof of the building off,” Williams said.
Everyone was able to get out of the building safely with only one person suffering a minor injury. Williams says there was about $250,000 in damages from water and the collapse of the roof. Most of the products inside, though, were in sealed boxes and were not damaged.
There is no word on what the company’s workers are going to do while the store is closed.
