WASHINGTON, DC (WWAY) — Rep. Mike McIntyre says he will work to keep the Surf City Post Office open.

Yesterday the US Postal Service announced plans to conduct studies of approximately 3,700 post offices nationwide to determine their viability and future. Surf City’s was the only post office in our area on the list.

“I will stand with the citizens of Surf City and do all I can to keep their Post Office open and operational,” McIntyre said in a statement. “Post offices are an important component of day-to-day living offering valuable services to residents and businesses. My office has talked with Mayor (Zander) Guy and reassured him of our commitment to the Surf City Post Office, and we will work together to get the US Postal Service the important details and facts about the Surf City Post Office.”

The Postal Service plans to look at doing away with some post offices and moving their services to other locations, like convenience and grocery stores.

Why not close them both?? I live in the Pine Valley area in Wilmington and have been using a post office substation at an Ace Hardware store for two years. Never a wait and service has always been courteous. Shutting down the government run post offices could open up opportunities for businesses both in Topsail and Surf City.

to close the one in Topsail Beach.

go check. Topsail Beach is run on a contract. Surf City was run on a contract basis.

It’s bad enough we get the annual migration of the red beaked, seer suckered summer renters. Now you want us to drive out of the area to a hardware store?

Maybe they should just let the new McDonald’s handle mail service.

What idiot would say it makes more sense to close surf city post office, we have to drive to hampstead if they close it. That is the dumbest comment I have ever heard, after all the fight to get the post office here.

The government cannot seem to address the divisions that function as a business. The USPS is no different then UPS or FedEX however, the government tries to treat it as such. They need to sell it to private enterprise, cut the redundant locations and move forward. The USPS is so far in debt if the government waits too long, no private enterprise will want to buy it. This is a great opportunity to cut the fat and move foward before its too late.

Does the Surf City Post Office A: lose money, B: break even, C: or operate at a profit?

If B or C…keep it open. Otherwise, close it.

If it comes down to a choice, close Holly Ridge and their inefficient staff instead of Surf City where staff is friendly, helpful and courteous.

This is why the Postal Service continues to lose money. They make attempts to cut costs, and someone in Congress jumps in to “save the day”. They try to reduce delivery schedules, congress says no. They try to close or consolidate under-utilized locations, congress says no. Yet when congress calls the Postmaster General to capitol hill, they want to know why he is able to reduce costs.

It’s time for congress to butt out!
