RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina Legislature has finalized new maps for the state Senate for the next decade, while the House maps are just one vote away from final passage.
The House agreed Wednesday along party lines to support Republican-drawn districts for the Senate’s 50 seats. The Senate voted for the map earlier this week. Boundaries for the state House’s 120 districts also cleared the Senate on Wednesday, but the House still must sign off on minor changes.
Republicans say the maps comply with state and federal laws and court rulings. They’ll also help the GOP retain their new majorities. Democrats argue the maps are illegal by creating too many majority-black districts.
A federal court and U.S. attorneys will review the final maps to ensure they meet anti-discrimination laws.
