WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Drivers sat in lines at Verizon Wireless this morning not for the latest high-tech gadget, instead they were getting rid of their old stuff.

Verizon’s Wilmington Call Center held an electronics recycling rally today. Folks dropped off their old computers, office equipment, pretty much anything with a plug.

“I needed to get rid of computer I’ve had for close to 20 years, and I didn’t know of any safe way to get rid of them,” David Beauchamp said during his visit to the event.

Within about an hour, the call center had enough old electronics to fill one truck and were almost finished loading a second truck.

“We wanted to come out here,” Verizon project manager John Dorn said. “We heard it’s a very green community, and apparently it really is, so it’s been great. Fabulous turnout. And all these items end up getting recycled.”

A new state law went into effect July 1 making it illegal to throw away your old electronics.
