Padgett wants travel policy amended after reimbursement request denied

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington City Councilwoman Laura Padgett says the city's travel policy needs to be amended. At the council meeting Tuesday night, Padgett proposed changing the policy by stating any reimbursement request that doesn't meet the travel policy to not be paid, which can then be appealed by the individual. She also proposed requiring members to request in person the use of additional money known as pool money to cover any extra expenses.

Padgett says the national committees she sits on that require her to travel all over the country are worth the thousands of dollars in taxpayers’ money.

“At least the voice of mid size cities like Wilmington is getting heard,” said Padgett. “Now, can I say that we have this number of dollars that came back? No. But, Wilmington was recognized in participating and recognized in being interested.”

Padgett spent more than $5,000 on travel during the last fiscal year, not including the $800 reimbursed by the national committees that she sits on.

“I think it's my responsibility to make the trips as cheap as possible,” said Padgett. “The only expense I asked for was out of pocket costs for the hotel.”

She asked the audit committee for about $700 to be reimbursed, but her request was turned down.

“If you take the time and effort and get involved at those levels, then the policy says you will be reimbursed for those through an additional fund,” said Padgett.

Padgett took trips to several places around the country including California, Texas, Washington and Colorado, spending more than $2,000 over what she says she was allotted. She says the meetings and trips are essential to get things accomplished in Wilmington.

“But those things take time and they take time in City Council,” said Padgett. “They take time to learn what's going on and they take time to develop.”

City Council voted to take up the travel policy issue again in two weeks at their next meeting.

laura padgett.

WAY TO GO., COMMENTERS ON PADGETT'S TRAVELS. AND SOME PEOPLE THINK THE COUNTY RESIDENTS WANT TO BE IN THE CITY.

Do you need any more evidence to vote these clowns out?

Okay Wilmington,
Come November 9, I hope we will have seen the last of Padgett and Sparks. Please get out and vote!

Barfield's Golf and Catlin's Private Jet...Our Tax Dollars!!!

Laura P. is frugal compared to a couple of our county commissioners...namely Barfield who never met a trip to a 5-star "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" Resort he wouldn't spend our money on...golf expenses, clubs, naked lady tees and all.

Rick Catlin and his buddy Barfield racked up how much just on airfare to jetset to Washington DC? They stayed in a rather pricey hotel too, when they could have stayed anywhere. How many stars? Was the holiday inn sold out?

Was that before or after Barfield went to the west coast for his summer taxpayer-funded vacation?

Kristi Campos, Jason Thompson and Brian Berger are much more fiscally conservative. At least when it comes to travel on taxpayer dime. I recall Campos paid for her date's meal when the Wilmington Council and their wives bought the lobster and filet mignon with chocalate desserts on us taxpayers. Thompson I dont recall ever being a big spender on trips or he keeps it well hidden. Berger has paid for his own gas and meals, at least some, saved us thousands by not taking that west coast trip like he could have, and he deserves credit...something your agenda at wway prevents...reporters can lie but receipts don't...so lets recognize these three responsible travelers. WWAY...stop letting your opinions pass for news...your liberals can work for you and fit right in there when we toss them out of office. Starting with Saffo and Co.

Are you serious?

Berger and Thompson? Are you serious?

You're going to vote them back in because they're "fiscally conservative"? Did you forget about the lack of anger management, trying to beat up ex-girlfriends, Huggies talk, and calling other commissioners out to the parking lot to beat the sh*t out of them?

What screw do you have loose?

"When you choose the lesser of two evils, always remember that it is still an evil." ~Max Lerner, Actions and Passions, 1949

Not running

Thompson is finally going to do New Hanover County a service and said he wasn't going to run for re-election. I'm thinking it is because with his big mouth and small brain he figured out he doesn't have a chance to get back in.

Thanks

Thanks, Guesty. I had read that previously, but misread Guest999 post to mean that he would vote for Berger/Thompson if they ran again. I stand corrected.

Padgett's attitude towards spending needs to be amended

“Now, can I say that we have this number of dollars that came back? No. But, Wilmington was recognized in participating and recognized in being interested.” ... Wow! Wilmington was reconized! That and $500 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks!
Sounds like Padgett's agenda is to become personally recognized elsewhere on our tax dollars.
Hey, if it walks like a duck and looks like a duck ..........???

Got to go!

Only worried about the money she can get her grubby little hands on to spend not the money she can save! OIC! Out you go dear..... out you go......

Policy

Don't like the policy? Change the policy to fit you. Typical Laura Padgett behavior.

“Now, can I say that we have this number of dollars that came back? No. But, Wilmington was recognized in participating and recognized in being interested.” - She admits that her trips aren't having any money come back to Wilmington, but hey, we show everyone that we're INTERESTED in spending multi-thousands of dollars for nothing.

“I think it's my responsibility to make the trips as cheap as possible,” said Padgett. “The only expense I asked for was out of pocket costs for the hotel.” - What hotel did she stay at for $700? If you want to travel as cheap as possible, stay at a Motel 8 or a Days Inn. Heck, they might even have a free continental breakfast.

Some folks haven't had a travel vacation in years, while she's the international jetsetter. If the citizens of Wilmington vote to keep this woman on city council again, they deserve what they get.

Keep trying

Keep trying to grab every penny you can while you are still in office. Hopefully like some of the other clowns you work with, this will be your last term.

What did she accomplish on her trips to CA, TX, DC & CO? How did that benefit Wilmington (other than getting her out of the area) financially?

Hey Guesty

You forgot Panama! Don't forget we have an INTERNATIONAL jetsetter here!

Travel money...pool

Travel money...pool money....give me money, I don't care!

“At least the voice of mid size cities like Wilmington is getting heard,” said Padgett. “Now, can I say that we have this number of dollars that came back? No. But, Wilmington was recognized in participating and recognized in being interested.”

Well now if that isn't one of the best arguments that could be made AGAINST funding this travel then I don't know what is.

Sure!!! Why not?

Just give the woman an open checkbook as she is "entitled" to have especially at "her level", whatever that is supposed to mean. Travels to California, Texas, Washington and Colorado are vitally important to the developement of Wilmington. The "Land of Fruits and Nuts" has so many twisted concepts to offer us here on the east coast. We have almost as many illegal aliens as they do, they can show us how to "budget" for them. We can have full love for all homosexuals, pedophiles, rapists and open marijuana production. We have the right woman on the job...NOT!!! Padgett, please make even a feeble attempt to prove to the people of the city of Wilmington just exactly how your coutrywide jaunts, and meetings are "essential" to getting ANYTHING "...accomplished in Wilmington".

Put the chest waders on and strap 'em tight folks, it's going to get very, very deep!

I just cannot wait until the next election!

What is

the National Multi Modal Steering Committee?

From another media source:

"Padgett said the $708 denied by the committee was money she spent on hotel stays in Washington, D.C., during a meeting for the national multi-modal steering committee, of which she is vice president."

I know what a model is. But what is a modal?

More importantly, how does a modal impact the Wilmington taxpayers in a positive manner?

She apparently spent over $7,000 in the most recent fiscal year for travel. I believe Council members were each budgeted under $2,000 for thta fiscal year.

I guess all that travel explains how she missed all the news and media articles on the tough financial times every local government agency is facing.

Perhaps someone can post a definition of modal.

I thought perhaps she was out recruiting new gentlemen's clubs to open in Wilmington.

But that fact is she was apparently $5,000 over her travel budget; and it appears she sees no reason not to continue dining at the City trough if no one will stand up to her.

Get rid of Padgett

Election time is coming. Vote this woman out. She should have been gone a LONG time ago. . along with other members.

So

to borrow the phrase from that old Wendy's commercial "Where's the Beef?"

By her own admission,“Now, can I say that we have this number of dollars that came back? No. But, Wilmington was recognized in participating and recognized in being interested.”

Is she that stupid or is it ego when she does not listen to her constituents?

Can she name one item, which has benefited the taxpayers and citizens of Wilmington? Just one -- name one positive aspect of all this travel which has benefitted Wilmington. That's a no brainer.

How in the world did Wilmington benefit from her trips to California, Texas, Washington, and Colorado?

What national committees does she sit on that can have a positive impact on Wilmington?

Really, name just one benefit Wilmington has received from all of her national activities. I guess one benefit is Wilmington has been recognized as a city which allows unfettered travel by a City Councilwoman at a time when budgets are being cut.

Can she point to one trade show which will be signing on with the Convention Center as a driect result of her travel?

In business, one is constantly reviewing the cost benefit relationship of any expense incurred. In her case, these are discretionary trips which she has failed to show have specific, relevant impact on the citizens whom she was elected to serve.

What does she not understand about that?

Scott -- here's your chance. Have a hard hitting reporter ask her for specifics as she leaves a Council meeting; and do it soon.

Voters, if you re-elect her, you have only yourselves to blame.
