WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The state has lifted a burn ban for much of eastern North Carolina, including the WWAY viewing area.

The North Carolina Forest Service says recent rain has allowed the lifting of the ban in Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Dare, Duplin, Hyde, Jones, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Robeson, Sampson, Tyrrell and Washington Counties effecting at 5 p.m.

“While recent rainfall has reduced fire danger, the state is still facing drought conditions,” Agriculture Commission Steve Troxler said in a statement. “If the drought continues and there is an increase in the number of wildfires, the ban on open burning could be reinstated.”

In the meantime, the Forest Service is again issuing burning permits.
