WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There’s no need to go to trial to resolve a civil suit stemming from a death in the New Hanover County Jail back in 2003. County Attorney Wanda Copley says a deal has been reached between the family of Gary Rummer and the county’s insurer.

The suit against the county and several deputies has been dismissed, but Copley says her office has not received any paperwork outlining the details of the settlement.

Rummer died after suffering severe injuries while deputies at the New Hanover County Jail tried to restrain him.

Yeah, I bet they reached a deal all right. Gary Rummer was murdered just like Peyton Strickland. IMO. Sid Causey has the blood of two people on his hands.

  • rummernator says:

Gary Rummer’s death was no accident, no more of an accident than a drunk wrecking into a woman pushing a baby carriage. I hope the family got paid big. What a shame it took so long too, shame on our county government, shame!

  • SurfCityTom says:

the real winner in this scenario will be the attorney who will pocket nearly as much if not more than the estate.

In these actions, the only true winners are the plaintiff attorneys.
