DURHAM, NC (AP) — Duke University has a Hindu chaplain for the
first time in its history.

The school said that Usha (OO’-shuh) Rajagopalan
(rah-zhah-GOH’-puh-lahn) has been hired to start the part-time
position this month.

She’ll provide guidance to members of the Hindu Students
Association and represent the group on Duke’s Faith Council.

Rajagopalan leads Hindu worship services in the Triangle area
and has degrees from the University of Maryland and a university in
India.

She says her goal as chaplain is to deepen students’
understanding of their lives while pursuing their educations.

Duke Chapel Dean Samuel Wells says the appointment is a sign of
the university’s commitment to bringing people from diverse
backgrounds into healthy dialogue and common aspirations.
