WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington church’s sign is still making news. Seagate Community Chapel’s sign has been making waves since last week when it was first posted. Now, the sign is in pieces, and police are looking for who’s to blame.

The sign warning homosexuals to “turn or burn” was peacefully protested Sunday morning and broken Sunday night.

The sign at Seagate Community Chapel in Wilmington usually welcomes folks into the church. But it’s been the focus of protests for an anti-gay message, which led to vandalism over the weekend.

Rachel Clary attended the peaceful protest Sunday morning. She says she never thought things would go this far.

“It was really, really disappointing,” Clary said. “We felt that it kind of took away from the entire message that we were trying to put out there like respond to this message of hate with a message of love and peace, and for someone to decide to completely really undermine that and not join with us but instead try to get that message out in a violent way, we felt that was completely inappropriate.”

Clary says she was offended by the sign, and she says she is not alone, but she cannot believe that it was destroyed. She says the protestors’ interaction with the church was non-confrontational, and that’s exactly what they had planned.

“We just wanted to send a peaceful message,” Clary said. “Everyone was really on board with that from the very beginning.”

Wilmington Pride president T.R. Nunley says ever since Nunley first found out about the sign, Nunley knew something had to be done, but Nunley never thought it would be criminal.

“We absolutely knew we needed to do something, but we didn’t want it to be that kind of violence,” Nunley said.

Nunley says, if anything, this sign just proves that there is still more work to be done to gain equality. Nunley says that Seagate Community Chapel may think homosexuals must turn or burn, but Nunley does not agree.

“They had their message, and we have ours,” she said. “You know, being gay is OK.”

We tried to contact Seagate Community Chapel this afternoon to get their take on the vandalism, but we not heard back.

The Wilmington Police Department says it is looking into the crime.

NONE of those are called out as “an abomination” save for a man lying with a man. They may be prohibited, but they are not singled out as abominations.

You can tell those commenting on here are not Christians. God loves everyone, he hates sin. The price of sin is death. Death in sin lands you in one place, hell. Therefore the sign’s message turn or burn means repent or spend eternity in hell. And yes non-believers will comment on this post and bash Christianity and bash God. For those people I pray every night tha God will find his way into your heart so that you may see the love God has for us all. But again, we can’t take that love and spend our lives the way we want to. We are to abide by God’s word and follow his laws in order to spend eternity on heaven.

Yet another who has not read the Bible.

  • Not Gay says:

Why don’t the church focus on the christian family values and get them fixed first before moving on to other issues? There is currently a 35% divorce rate among non denominational so called christians. Baptist are 29%. And the church is going to focus on gay and lesbian relationships? The bible says God see’s sin as sin. Not a degree of sin. Gay and lesbians are no more sinners than the lying, gossiping little on lady that warms the pew every Sunday. ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD. Do the christian community a favor and quit being a hippocrate. Remember when you point your finger at someone you have 3 pointing back at you. Try it. God Bless.

  • Jared says:

I am glad that the hateful sign was destroyed. These bigots practice spiritual terrorism against gay people. It is time to fight back. Whoever did it, bravo. I hope you’re not caught. You destroyed a sign, the bigots destroy people’s souls. I wonder how many people they have driven to despair and suicide.

  • Ron says:

Our family is Christian and I can tell you that is a church we would never join. How can the members of that church count themselves as followers of Christ? Anyone who would put up a sign like that needs to refresh themselves on what the two greatest commandments are.

  • Timothy Kincaid says:

Perhaps no one hates better than Bible Thumping haters. But you’re certainly giving them a tough competition.

Hate is hate whether coming from self-righteous people who think that God justifies their bigotry or whether coming from someone who thinks that ‘other people’s hate’ justifies violence.

Both are based on – and justified by – the target. And thinking that others deserve what we would never accept for ourselves, based on who they are, is the basis behind all bigotry.

  • Four observations:

    1. Some Christians have twisted that a bit to read, “If you love God, you will obey ME”. God is perfectly capable of dealing with those he disapproves of, He doesn’t need you. And he very much resents you for claiming that your biases are his.

2 Your “real life story” is a fiction. Sure there are professional ex-gays and there are some who really believe it. But research conducted by two evangelical Christian professors at two ultra-conservative colleges (who really wanted to find these mythical people who discovered that homosexuality is a choice) concluded that there were no heterosexuals that resulted (or not as you and I would define “heterosexual”). All of them – every one – still experienced same-sex attraction.

3 Those who speak “the truth in love” are never interested in either. Never. What you call “the truth” is really just your church’s teaching, and not based on any scientific evidence or even regular ol’ observation. It’s “truth” is simply dogma like the “truth” about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. And your “love” is just a word you throw in to make yourself feel good about holding other people liable to your beliefs contrary all real hard observable evidence.

    4. Let’s decide if the sign was loving:

Was it patient towards gay people? No, not really.
Was it kind? Most certainly not.
Was it lacking in envy? That one’s hard to say.
    Did it boast? Most defintely.
    Was it proud? Without question.
Did it dishonor gay people? Not even you could deny this.
Did it keep a record of wrongs? Oh, you betcha.
Did it delight in evil? Turn or burn certainly seems to be awfully happy about the burn part.
Did it protect gay people, trust them to live their own lives, hope for their happiness, and persevere in granting them autonomy? Well, you might say it did exactly the opposite.

So, unless Scripture is wrong, there was no love coming from this church.

  • Christina says:

I am really upset about the choices for the opinion “poll” posted about this. Where is the answer “No it was not a “Christian” thing to do?

  • Timothy says:

If we are basing good morals on what Jesus based them on (treating others the way you want to be treated – on which ALL the law is subsidiary), then I’d be in better company almost anywhere but this church.

  • Timothy says:

I am not subject to the Law of Sin and Death. Perhaps you need a refresher on Christian theology. Next you’ll be insisting that I sacrifice a lamb and wave a grain offering.

  • SMBeez says:

Homosexuality may not be a choice. It is however a choice to act upon the feelings, it is a choice to have gay sex, it is a choice to live an immoral and unnatural lifestyle.
Whether you believe in burning in hell or not is irrelevant. Like it or not, it is not hatred that states you are immoral and sinful, it is the laws of Christianity. Just like the rest of your homosexual supporters the leftist liberals, you throw tantrums and cry when you cannot have your way.
Homosexuality is unnatural. the human race cannot exist, you cannot reproduce if you act upon gay tendencies.
I do not hate gay people, I do not practice predjudice against gay people, I try and tolerate gay people. If you cannot see the fact that homosexuality is a flaw, a chemical inbalance, a brain wire crossed, an unnatural state of mind, then I do not know what to say.
    Homosexuality is not normal, period.
God gave us free will. With free will you can choose to love God or not. With free will you can choose to act upon unnatural feelings or not. You cannot choose which laws to follow and not expect to pay the consequences for those YOU DECIDE to break!!!

    Wow…

Have you ever stopped to think about what kind of god you serve? I’m sure you think that if you were born in ancient Egypt that you’d still choose good over evil, but you seem more like the type who would fling their children to the crocodile god because their priest said they should.

You believe what you think your god says. Why? It seems that your god is a pretty nasty sort who hates people just out of whim.

A good and moral person would look at what your god has to offer and say, “Fine. Burn me in hell forever but I will not be cruel just because you want me to.”

But that takes courage. And, of course, being a good and moral person.

(Fortunately, my God isn’t so big on the hate stuff as yours)

  • This makes me sad says:

It is simple. Read the Bible. It provides all the answers.

  • Timothy Kincaid says:

I agree entirely. Vandalism was wrong. These people should have the freedom to believe any nonsense they choose.

  • guest111 says:

It is not any church’s place to publicly go against anyone for anything. Standing on street corners against abortion or putting up signs against gays. . . wrong! Politics don’t belong in church either. The church is not going to change gays or women who decide, within their rights, what to do with their bodies. Keep your sermons inside and if you think it is appropriate and necessary, pray for those whom you think are wrong but it is not something you should go public with. You are totally out of line with this behavior. I actually quit a church I loved because they became radical and started trying to take on issues that were out of line. Educate yourselves on gays. It’s not a choice they make.

  • Guest says:

You’ve got to love free speech. Just don’t let it affect you, then it should be squashed. Wonderful how libs have their own rules.

  • GuestLee says:

Something tells me that they won’t miss your company.

  • jmm says:

the sign didn’t say “turn or burn”, the people that took offense said it!! the Church has every right to voice that homosexuality is a sin, just like you have the right to your “gay” march and parades!! get over it!

  • Guest1118 says:

If it were a mosque with a similar sign/message? The “religion of peach” doesn’t just condemn homosexuality. They kill them, sometimes by stoning. Just sayin’………

  • Guest3230 says:

I think they should be more concerned with the clergy that pery on innocent little boys. I guess thats not a problem with this group. Hows that worken for the church.

  • Guest2264 says:

I haven’t attended church in years, but my parents took me when I was younger. We learned that you should love everyone and treat people with respect, no matter what race, religion, sexual preferance or culture they were! Things like this sign only add to the hatred in the world. I sure won’t be going to THIS church, sounds like they need to read into the bible deeper and learn the ten commandments! and “freedom of speech”, gee I thought that meant as long as it didn’t condemn others?

  • Guest6858 says:

No sir or madam, YOU need to read the Bible deeper. Why is everyone in society today so afraid to admit what they believe and so intent upon offending no one? IT’S OKAY TO BELIEVE ONE THING OVER THE OTHER!! That’s fine. But it seems to me that it’s perfectly acceptable to tolerate whatever this society wants…good, bad or indifferent, yet tolerance of a true Christian is not given. Guess what? I wouldn’t want to go to YOUR church. You, my friend, are a hypocrite.

  • Guest461 says:

I’m a little lost here. So…what ARE the two “greatest Commandments” that you speak of? I was taught that there are TEN Commandments and that they are all great. You may be the one that needs a bit of “refreshing”. It’s sort of funny with you “New Age” religious people. You can turn one area of the Bible against other areas, make rules, kill rules, have halfway rules, or no rules at all depending on how you read it, when you read it, how you interpret it and most importantly…how you PRACTICE it and even then, when it is convenient for you.

The 10 Commandments are the basic rules of life that one should do their best to live by, none of them are of ANY greater or lesser importance than the other.

  • GuestLee says:

My own personal opinion is that the church should have omitted the “Turn or Burn” statement, and left the rest of the sign the way it was. Adding to the scripture isn’t necesssary. The Bible says it better than “man” ever will.

  • Guest802 says:

Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. Freedom to be gay or not like gay people. You can say what you feel and be what you want. They have the right to put the sign up. They have the right to protest. I thought thats what our country was founded on? You don’t have the right to destroy some elses things. Thats where the line got crossed. Really it boils down to the church was politically incorrect. We do still have that right dont we. I do believe that is the freedom of speech.

  • Guest says:

    Four observations:
    1. What background to you have to correct those who have placed their faith in the scriptures? You clearly refuse to see the historical facts of the Bible. You fail to see the responsibility the scriptures place on believers to go into the world to lead the lost to salvation. Your limited understanding causes you to fail at understanding the truth. If you don’t believe in something you don’t know if someone is twisting it to fit their world view.

    2. Your second comment is pointless with no reference to resource. You’re one of those who believes that homosexuality is more natural than heterosexuality. You rejoice at the idea that a person will walk out on their family to live the homosexual life. You clearly show your hate for something you don’t understand and refuse to know.

    3. Learn the difference between truth and fact. Just because you don’t believe it doesn’t make it false. No matter how much you refuse to believe in Jesus the facts show that he lives.
Your “love” is a twisted understanding of sex. They are not the same thing but you think they should be. Christians are not hold you liable to anything. Christians are not making you accountable for anything. Christians are warning you but you misconstrued it for condemnation. The truth is the homosexual agenda is forcing society to accept, nurture, and promote their behavior. Christians are not forcing anything on you. You’re so thin skinned that you believe anything that speaks out against you is hate but your hypocrisy keeps you from seeing the truth about yourself.

    4. The sign is about love. It address the person is loved by God. It address that the person is not the behavior. I was patient toward homosexuals and others who do not believe in God. God loves all but hates sin, no matter what the sin is. The sign was kind, it told you that God loves you. It did not condemn homosexuals. What is there to envy about the homosexual lifestyle, it is dangerous and unhealthy. Yes, it boasted. It boasted about the love of God. It was proud of the power of God’s salvation through His son. For God so loved the World that He gave His only Son that who so ever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. It did not dishonor homosexuals, they dishonor themselves. There is nothing honorable about homosexuality. It did not keep a record of wrong. It pointed out that God hates sin, period. It is you who keeps a record of wrong because you don’t know grace and forgiveness. Turn or burn is not delighting in evil, it is a warning to those who do not turn from their evil ways. Jesus spoke more about hell than he did about heaven. Homosexuals don’t want to live their own lives. They want to force it on society. What protection is their in homosexuality. CDC records show that over 57% of all new AIDS/HIV cases are from men who have sex with men. Telling people of the dangers of the homosexual lifestyle is an offering of hope.

Homosexuals are seeking special rights. History and science, medicine and religion have all discredited homosexuality. The homosexual agenda is a political agenda. It offers no hope or benefit to society. God is being forced out of our public school system while GLSEN is pushing the homosexual agenda on children as young as 5 and 6 yro. And the worse part about it is parents are being prohibited from protecting their children from such lessons. When they stand up to protest they are threatened with law suites and incarceration. Who is forcing what on whom? It is the homosexualist who are pushing their unwanted lifestyle on society.

You don’t believe love is coming from this church because you don’t know what love is. Don’t confuse love with lust.

One of the Pharisees tested Jesus with a question, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:36). Jesus replied, ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40). This is what the post was referring to, I do believe.

    From Matthew 22:
    34) Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35) One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36) “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
    37) Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38) This is the first and greatest commandment. 39) And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40) All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

“It is not any church’s place to publicly go against anyone for anything”. OH REALLY!

What would you suggest the church do? Maybe meet one hour on Sunday and talk among ourselves while the world falls apart around us? How silly and immoral that would be?

If your neighbors house is ablaze –would you just sit in your house and pretend not to notice because it isn’t your place to tell them they are one fire?

“All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” I guess that’s your point..

  • TheWorld'sBiggestJerk says:

but I’ll admit that Christians make for easy, PC-friendly targets when the left wants to get all riled up. If this had been a mosque, it would not be a story – it wouldn’t have even made for hushed dinner party conversation. If this had been a mosque, these pampered, largely UNCW based, protesters sure as heck wouldn’t have been protesting in front of it! One things for sure, NOBODY associated with the opposition would have had the guts to damage their sign! I’ll give that to the Muslims, they command respect.

  • Guest2020 says:

The Great Commission as given by Jesus Christ was for His followers to “go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Do homosexuals keep their beliefs to themselves? No. We are inundated with it on television. There are gay pride parades and other things they do to make their beliefs known. Christians are constantly called haters because they believe the homosexual lifestyle to be a sin. So why are Christians the only ones who are not allowed to say what they believe? Most Christians I know hate the sin, but love the sinner because the Bible says that we are to love everybody.

  • Guest7969 says:

your explaining sin…doesn’t make sense…YOU WILL DIE with sin..PERIOD..unless you get that golden opportunity before you draw your last breath to ask for forgiveness…your going to heaven with sin NOT forgiven. THAT isn’t going to send you to Hell…accepting Jesus Christ into your heart is what keeps you out of Hell, nothing more, nothing less.

  • Guest7969 says:

THANK YOU for proving my point…how funny it is for those to be calling for justice and tolerance…HAVE NONE! Christians have a RIGHT to post up whatever they like…just like you have a right to put gay slogans on your signs in parades…where everyone sees them. You don’t have a RIGHT to be NOT offended…

  • Tracie says:

Just one question…God gave up and said this particular church gets to be his “judgement stand-in”? Look, if you’re going to play Christian remember who said he is the ONE TRUE JUDGE. If you take that statement to be “true” and you claim to be a “Christian” ANYONE who passes judgement is playing God and I do believe that would be considered a “sin” no? Explain that one oh great and perfect “Christians”.

  • Guest says:

God made everyone. Simple as that. Reading the Bible doesn’t have anything to do with something that has been medically proven to exist. A chemical imbalance is not a choice. I didn’t ask for that to happen to my daughter but it did. To look at her you would think she is a boy. She didn’t ask for that. God made her that way. Lifestyle…who cares. Live and let live. We are made in the image God wanted us to be made in. Hate should never be an issue but unfortunately it is. People hate anything different: people of color, people from other countries, people with disabilities. It is a shame that we cannot just love each other but that will never happen. I feel sorry for those that cannot just let go of pettiness and get along.

  • Stephen Ellis says:

I dont know what church you went to but the only thing the bible says about gays is that its an abomination in the eyes of GOD.Nowhere does it say anything about sexual preference, except for the disgust of homosexuality by GOD himself.Tolerance is not acceptance!!!!!

Are you for real? The purpose of the church is to bring the word of GOD to the masses, not hide inside a room.As for it not being a choice, thats just a perverted mind trying to justify a behavior they know is wrong.EDUCATE YOURSELF.

You bring some valid points guest6858. I admit that and won’t argue with you. I just think this world would be a better place w/o so much hatred upon people, that’s all. And my parents quit going to church years ago, because it wasn’t a “fellowship”…it appeared that the members just wanted to see who was wearing what and gossip about the town folks. That’s not what it’s about from what I learned. Just sayin…..

  • Guestgood says:

Good! That Church is run by a bunch of Bible Thumping haters. Nobody hates better than them…

  • GuestLee says:

Although the Bible doesn’t tell believers to persecute or taunt unbelievers, it does say:

    1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

    2 Corinthians 6:14
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?

    Just wanted to clarify.

  • GuestLee says:

Oh, I don’t know…you seem to be doing a pretty good job of that yourself.

  • GuestLee says:

Judging one church and condemning all the others is like judging one person and condemning the whole human race. Every church is different, and sometimes you’re going to find some that God Himself would not attend. But if you keep looking, God will lead you to the right church where He wants you to be. I hope you’ll try.

  • Guestyou says:

Don’t lump all Christians into the same category, because then you’re doing the same thing the people at this church are doing….judging.

Judge not, lest ye be judged.
    or
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Either one, I think would be good for this church’s sermon next Sunday.

  • Guest2020 says:

I agree with you completely. I have been in some really good churches and have been in some that turned out to be complete duds. But, I never gave up finding the right one.

  • nomad says:

Other things the Bible calls “abomination”:

    *eating shellfish
    *eating eagles and vultures
    *men wearing women’s clothes/women wearing men’s clothes
    *lying

So it’s not like homosexuality is something singled out as being especially bad. The “abomination” argument puts homosexuality on par with eating lobster and women wearing pants.

  • Guest7777 says:

It is loving to tell someone they are sinning. To you who say Jesus said to “Love your neighbor.” He did but when He loved them, he cured them, he taught them, He fed them and he said “Go and sin no more.” Jesus never tolerated sin, accepted sin: He loved the people–all of them. When the religious leaders asked him why he ate with sinners, He said, I came for the sick not the well. His purpose is to lead us in the right way. God has rules. He says, “If you love me, you will obey me.”
The sign was a reminder that God loves us all. After all, he wanted us here on the earth. He knew you “before you were formed in your mother’s womb.” And that is a reason to be against abortion by the way. Standing on a corner and silently objecting to abortion is not hateful. Please.
A loving person does not want the one He or she loves to get hurt. So it is an obligation then in love to speak the truth in love. Decide if the sign was loving or not.
I had a friend who wondered why Christians kept telling her she was lost. I explained jsut think if you really beleived someone was going to die in hell, be without God forever, burn in hellfire; it really would be so unloving not to help the person on earth, wouldn’t it? Walk a mile in another’s shoes. We love gays. This says we love you, but you are in sin. No more no less.
Talk to someone who has turned from a life of homosexuality to the love of God. You might get a new view on whether homosexuality is a choice or not. Maybe. A real life story: From being on the streets prostitituing himself with men to becoming a Praise Leader in a church and with a beautiful family and young children. Ask him about the difference in his life!

  • william Miller says:

The christian’s don’t hate the gays..they are only going by their bible which says love the sinner but hate the sin.(they are only trying to help them to stop sinning. there ar several places in the old and new testament which talks about the evil of homosexual acts. It is not a sin to have homosexual tendencies, but it is to carry them out.

  • Guest says:

Interesting…..You said…..”It is not any church’s place to publicly go against anyone for anything” I will agree with the terminology “go against” however it IS the purpose of the church to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ which is the Bible, the word of God. The “church” as exemplified in the Bible really is NOT contained within 4 walls of a building. God commissions His people to “spread the good news from nation to nation.” The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. There is no question about that. God destroyed an entire city because of sexual immorality in the Bible. It is absolutely the purpose of the church to “go public” with its message. In this situation, I do agree that the terminology “turn or burn” may be offensive and is not terminology I would have used. However, the Bible is very clear on sexual immorality. Heteroexual immorality is sinful. The Bible states sex is for marriage between a man and a woman. Therefore, ANY sex outside of marriage btwn a man and a woman is a sin-as defined by the Bible. It says in Leviticus 18:22 “You must not have sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman; it is a detestable act.” Also, Leviticus 20:13 “If a man has sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman, the two of them have committed an abomination. They must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves.” I don’t know how it could be anymore clear===that is straight from the Bible. Either you believe the Bible or you dont, but I do. Having sex with anyone of the same sex/gender is wrong. It IS a sin. Having said all that, I totally agree with “hate the sin but love the person.” You can state your belief on what sin is AND show love to the person you believe is the sinner. Love is the greatest commandment and should be shown at all times.

  • Guest says:

You said….”It is however a choice to act upon the feelings, it is a choice to have gay sex.” ABSOLUTELY! EXCELLENT POINT! There is a difference between having homosexual tendencies/desires and participating in homosexual acts. Homosexuality is definitely a sin according to the Bible. Each person, Christian or not, has weakness and temptations. Some may be tempted to use drugs; some may be tempted to have lots of heterosexual sex, etc…. Every person has something they naturally gravitate to. The KEY in this is the CHOICE to act upon it. If a person is an alcoholic, its because they chose to drink and drink A LOT. If a person weighs 800 pounds, that person is obviously tempted to eat and eat a lot, but he made the CHOICE to be severely obese. Temptations, desires, natural tendencies, etc…. are present in every person….its how we act on those that matters.

There are some who take what the Bible says Literally.. in our country we have freedom of religion & freedom of speech. I dont like gay pride parades, but i dont throw tomatoes.. if i go with the logic of the vandals, perhaps i should return the favor considering there are some in the gay community who are heterophbes

  • Das Weibstück says:

Fred Phelps called, he wants his sign back.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

I support freedom of speech just as much as I support gay rights.

Keep acting like sneaky little weasels and I can lose interest in gay rights quickly.

That church had a constitutional right to put up that sign, and anyone with a brain, regardless of sexual orientation, would respect that. Start acting like little Nazis and you set your cause back years.

  • Christopher says:

I do not think a gay person destroyed the Seagate sign. Such an act would put them in a bad light and give narrow, mean-spirited people more reason to dislike them.

I think the person(s) responsible for destroying the sign wanted to create acrimony between the church people, the general public, and the gays, who were rightly offended by the church’s hateful message.

For the life of me, I cannot understand the continuing harrassment of gays. From my own experience, I must say that some of the warmest, most intelligent, and creative people I have ever known were gay. They should be treasured, not despised.

  • Guest CommonTater says:

Christians will no more support it than the gays will let it go that they don’t. Both sides believe what they do and it’s always the “other” side that is ignorant for not believing the way “you” do. I will not believe what the “other” side tells me for some BS politically correct reasons…. The freedom here is to actually allow more than one point of view without getting your panties in a wad. Get over it…..

  • Guest7969 says:

when do you think God’s message is all sugar. The FACT is…if you fail to repent of your sins and accept Jesus as your savior..YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY BURN IN HELL. Now..the decision of who will and will not…is not mine, nor any other Christians to make…however, the Bible is VERY clear on this.

However, I DO believe you have a point…alienating yourself from the very people you are trying to reach out to…is counterproductive to what you are trying to accomplish. My feelings are this…sin is sin, the Bible DOES list specific sins God REALLY hates…BUT God is perfect and sinless and hates ALL SIN….I can assure you that every person in that congregation, as well as, the pastor..is NOT without a sin that God hates JUST AS MUCH…I can almost PROMISE you that. What this church has done is ensure that NO GAY EVER walks thru their door to hear the word of God. A church belongs to GOD…and if God were to walk the planet today he wouldn’t be in a church…he would be with the most sinful disgusting individuals he could find to spread the word of his love. That love however, has an expiration date…called Judgement, at that time even though his love will remain..your sinful nature and refusal to accept him as savior will place you in eternal damnation.

  • GuestLee says:

I totally agree with your post. The church had every right to express their views, right or wrong, even if gays don’t approve.

If you take away the right of the church to express their viewpoint, you are opening the door to everyone’s rights being taken away, including gays. It’s freedom of speech, and everyone has a right to be heard.

  • Guest says:

    Well said, Albie.

  • Rachel says:

I was the one who made the comment about sending a peaceful message, not the church. However, a church member did say in a previous interview that the intention of the sign was to send a message of love.

  • Guest says:

wilmington pride wanted to send the peaceful message and they DID! it was seagate community chapel who sent a hateful, intolerant, disgusting message.

  • Guest7969 says:

First, the turn or burn part is judgmental. GOD is the only judge of who is going to burn and who isn’t. Second…while God’s message is love and forgiveness…there will be NO forgiveness when your time is up to have chosen. The FACT is that God has stated homosexuality is a sin…PERIOD. You can spin it all you want to make yourself feel better…but it is what it is. I don’t hate a single homosexual…I DO hate their sin…however, I am not any better as I have sin that God hates just as much.

Christians get bashed left and right, put down and cursed at….by the very people who demand equality and tolerance. Christians are human, not gods…they are subject to the same sin as everyone else. If you go to church expecting to see a congregation full of perfect gods…you will ALWAYS be disappointed.

Lastly…this whole thing is a product of our government pandering to the minority. Our country has become a country of BIG SISSY BABIES that think because they don’t like something they have to get their way and be rid of it. If you don’t like the flipping sign, DON’T READ IT!

  • Guest says:

“”We just wanted to send a peaceful message,”

You’re gonna burn in hell is NOT a “peaceful” (nor loving) message.

    DO BETTER!

  • Rachel says:

No, we are not trying to alienate supporters. The vandalization of the sign had nothing to do with the PEACEFUL protest or anyone involved. Unfortunately this act is overshadowing the work that so many people did to promote equality. The point of this article was to say that the protestors do not support the people involved with the act of violence.

  • Guest says:

The so-called “Christians” have been committing violence against gay people, for centuries. The so-called “Christians” have very recently threatened violence against gay people. The sign in question was an EXPLICIT THREAT of violence against gay people. Vandalism is inappropriate, and I am sure no one condones it. However, the vandalism of that sign was clearly an act of speech. And, no one was harmed.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

Are you actually working hard to alienate those who DO support your right to be gay and still be treated equally?

  • Guest says:

How is threatening to “burn” God’s gay and lesbian children in ANY way showing “support” for all citizens to be “treated equally”?

If and when “Christians” actually DO support that right, you’ll have a point. Until then though, …

  • Bawesome says:

Just another reason in the long line of reasons why religion is a blight on society. You never see scientist damning other scientist to hell if they disagree with their beliefs. A lot of religious followers fear that their beliefs will unravel. Instead, they declare that faith is greater than intellectualism. A lot of this hate, fear, racism and bigotry could be avoided in future generations if you just stop brainwashing your children. Let them grow up, take world religion classes and then let them decide for themselves if they want to be religious, but the religious hierarchy would never let that happen because then you would only find devout religious followers on the fringes of society.

  • Terry Spivey says:

If you will study the Bible you will see that Jesus does love everyone but he does not love the way people live in sin. You will also see that homosexuality is DEFINITELY prohibited in the Old AND New Testaments. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and you will see that homosexuals WILL NOT be allowed into heaven. If a soul is not allowed into heaven the only other place it can be put is in the Lake of Fire or HELL as we commonly call it. Jesus does not want anyone to have to be placed into hell but He WILL NOT allow any unrepentant sinner to enter into heaven and regardless of whether he/she is a layperson, priest or does not attend church they will be thrown into the lake of fire if they do not repent their sins. ALL homosexuals are sinners and unless they stop practicing homosexuality when they ask Jesus to come into their lives they are UNREPENTANT sinners and WILL NOT enter into heaven but because of THEIR unrepented sins WILL be cast into the lake of fire! This is also true for unrepentant adulterers, liars, thieves, slanders, along with a long list of other sinners as well. As stated earlier it will be THEIR sins that cause them to be cast into the lake of fire.

  • Guest7969 says:

Where did you get that, moveon?? You are INCORRECT sir…don’t make yourself look like an idiot. The term “faggot” was actually used towards WOMEN LONG before it was used to describe men who are viewed as sissy’s..which don’t necessarily have to be GAY men!

  • Guest says:

“Turn or burn”??? Well, I’m pretty sure some “Christians” would LOVE to burn some homosexuals. In fact, the burning of homosexuals by “Christians” is the origin of the word “faggot”.

    Who would Jesus burn?

  • Guestgingergrant says:

Why stop at the homosexuals? The Bible also says eating pork is a sin! BURN THE BARBECUE EATERS!

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

…identify eating pork as “an abomination in the sight of the Lord.”

That honor is reserved for a man lying with a man.

I’m thinking that since MALE homosexuality is resoundingly condemned in the Old and New Testament, that the Lesbians should make a clean break and join forces with the Christian churches that claim Gays are going to burn in hell. The Bible is mute on Lesbianism, as far as I recall.

Lesbians might be able to legimately claim that “Yeah, those gay guys with those nasty pokey things are going to burn in hell. We, on the other hand, are children of God….”

  • Guest says:

Whether you like it or not.. it is freedom of speech! Gay’s don’t mind expressing the way that they feel..whether you want to see it or your children to see it. But, we are to accept their lifestyle! That is what is wrong with the world today.. We have accepted to much and now we are paying for it.. If you believe in the bible, God clearly tells you how he feels about that kind of lifestyle (It’s an abomination unto God)… Just read about Sodom, Gomorrah. Yes, God does love the sinner.. But, he hates the sin. You can’t live like Hell and expect to go to heaven.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

It made a statement based upon their religious beliefs, nothing more. The gay community should have simply ignored it, instead of whipping up this frenzy which has done nothing but give the gays a black eye.

  • Guest7969 says:

are a hypocrite..YOU discriminate EVERY DAY against someone who is different than you on some level…it’s human nature, a sin, but human nature nonetheless!

  • Lola says:

I can’t belive people discriminate human begings for their sexuality, race, appearence or anything else and still go to church thinking they are going to heaven…so stupid.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

It referred to burning in hell, genius.

  • Guest7969 says:

you please post up your address…so I can preform an act of FREE SPEECH….I mean…nobody will be harmed so it’s OK right!?

  • Guest7969 says:

ONE simple thing keeps you out of hell…accepting Jesus into your heart. From there sins CAN be forgiven, but there is NO requirement to have all sins forgiven to make it into heaven. EVERY human sins..from that preacher on the pulpit to a 5 year old child. The likelihood of you dying quickly without a chance to repent of looking at that half dressed girl while you ran into a light pole and killed yourself…is high. THE ONLY requirement…is to accept Jesus as savior…PERIOD…now, being saved means you do your best to turn from sin…but most CERTAINLY don’t become sinless. The last part of that sign in itself passes judgement…which IS a sin. There is ONLY ONE judge who will decide who gets into heaven and the Bible CLEARLY states you will be surprised in heaven seeing who is and who isn’t getting in.
