BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — She got out of her cruiser, but forgot to put it in park. A Pender County Sheriff’s deputy soon realized that she made a mistake when the car slammed into a home.

Around 1:30 a.m. on August 6 Sgt. Britt Chastain pulled up to the Pender County Jail. She got out of her cruiser, and moments later the car hit head-on into this home next door.

“Basically the house was a couple feet away from the side of the jail,” Capt. Billy Sanders said. “The car rode into the front of the porch, the corner side of the porch.”

According to this accident report Sgt. Chastain had not placed her car in park. It rolled from a resting position, going over this curb and into the foundation of the house.

The accident report also says a woman was in the cruiser as it rolled under the sally port of the jail and into the porch. The woman, who was on her way to a mental commitment at the hospital, was not hurt.

“Hopefully this accident won’t happen again,” Sander said. “It’s random. I don’t know if it has ever happened in my time of being here. It was just an accident.”

The sheriff’s office is using the crash as a learning experience. It has alerted each deputy about what happened to stress the need to be alert of what they are doing as they go through their day.

We contacted the owner of the home, Patsy Richardson, who is currently renting out the house. She said the damage may not look like much at first glance, but richardson is concerned about the strength of the foundation now.

Richardson is waiting on the county’s insurance adjuster to determine the amount of damage. The deputy’s cruiser suffered about $800 worth of damage.

That was a simple mistake that everyone makes and other cops could have done worse the main thing was no one was hurt!!! You see crashes that involve other cop cars that are worse than that like the car was rolled, the front end got pushed in, the car caught on fire. It doesn’t matter as long as no one got hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are dozens of similar wrecks each day. The only ones that grab the headlines, are when the cops mess up. Hey, it happens to everyone, and we’re human too.

It seems as though every Northerner that relocates here is full of insults and criticisms of everything in the South-from the heat to the culture. If it is so terrible down here, WHY DON’T YOU MOVE?? We’ll be just fine without you!

  • Yankee Master says:

Maybe you-all forgot, the Yankees kicked the South’s ass in a little war a few years ago. I know you are still sore, but let it go. Unless you want to get in a reparation payment too?? You can’t have it both way no matter how hard you cry. Suck it up and be a man for once.

  • GuestLee says:

Just like a Yankee to agree with another Yankee who is totally wrong on his facts. It’s cotton…not rice, dummy.

  • guesty says:

And you have to love a state that kept electing a man as senator that killed a woman while he was driving drunk. I’ll take an outhouse over a drunk murderer any day.

no loss of land and accepted the Southern states back into the Union almost as if nothing ever happened. Also, the Union lost about 100,000 more soldiers than did the South. I don’t know if you can say Yankees “kicked the South’s ass.” In the end, Southern Senators and Representatives were seated during the next Congressional term, Lincoln was assassinated (which was bad for both sides as he also wanted a “soft peace”) and the South struggled with reconstruction while the North dealt with The Great Deluge – the massive influx of immigrants that occurred until the early 20th Century. A period of great struggle and loss for both sides persisted for many years and in the end, the real difference was slavery didn’t exist – well not technically but it did. Remember, the entire US lost the cotton export (the oil of its time) which was 60% of US exports and produced almost entirely in the South. The only people who “lost” were large slave owners and that system was simply replaced with the sharecropping system. A whole lot of death and agony occurred to change a labor system from free to sorta free. When the smoke cleared, Southern cotton producers exploited sharecroppers and Northern cities exploited immigrants & newly freed slaves with no other options but to do back breaking and dangerous work. The were no DSS agencies to take care of immigrants and freed slaves. They worked or starved.

  • GuestLee says:

All kidding aside, you’ve got to love a group (Yankees) who takes credit for winning a war where more than half of all deaths were the result of disease (not bullets) – – typhoid fever, dysentery, tuberculosis and pneumonia. But, hey, maybe we caught it from you guys, so you can still take the credit!

And don’t forget that Gen. Grant was the biggest drunk in the Union, so all he had to do was aim for a fence post and he couldn’t help but hit a Rebel!

  • guest111 says:

. .you’re a yankee. That explains it all!

  • guest111 says:

You have it all wrong. . as most yankees do. A redneck is someone who parties out of the back of pick ups, drinks beer while riding on the roof of pickups, has loud pipes on the truck, antennas everywhere, dresses as a redneck, (jeans, western shirt, hats. boots ) etc. spits tobacco on the ground, plays country music LOUD and has a language all their own.

People who grow rice are called FARMERS.

GIT YERSELF BACK UP NORTH WHERE YOU BELONG!!

  • SurfCityTom says:

rice was never a significant cash crop in North Carolina. South Carolina, Louisiana, and Georgia would count rice as a cash crop.

If you don’t know what grits are or what they consist of, you must be a Yankee.

  • guesty says:

….than having all of you down here. We don’t care how you did it back home. If it was so much better, go back to it.

  • GuestLee says:

    Don’t you mean cotton?

If it weren’t for yankees, the South would be a much better place.

  • Redneck says:

I’m fine with growing rice. Please go back up NORTH!!!! you won’t be miss

I thought the answer was going to be George W. Bush???

  • Guest says:

    ha ha ha so true

  • Guest says:

All kidding aside, you’ve got to love anyplace that still has outhouses..

  • GuestLee says:

No, we will never forget. Even if we could forget, you ignorant and ungracious a$$holes keep reminding us by shoving it down our throats.

Your own President Lincoln was much more gracious than you. At his second inaugural address, he ended with a plea to heal the nation: “With malice toward none; with charity for all.” Lincoln called for all Americans to “bind up the nation’s wounds” and “do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.”

Thinkexist.com says, “If there ever was in the history of humanity an enemy who was truly universal, an enemy whose acts and moves trouble the entire world, threaten the entire world, attack the entire world in any way or another, that real and really universal enemy is precisely Yankee imperialism.”

I realize these ideas may be much higher thinking than your postings suggest, but please give it a try.

She was probably trying to multitask.

  • GuestLee says:

    Only to other “Yankaees”.

  • guesty says:

I’m sure you meant to put Yankees have rocks in their heads!!!! Also notice the spelling of Yankee.

  • Guest11 says:

    Yankaees Rock!!!!

  • secret says:

laugh all you want to. Go back there now and say they are lazy and a joke, and aren’t busy!!!!

  • PCSD LOSERS says:

The Pender County Sheriff’s Office is a joke. Someone says as busy as they are hahahahaha, guess you haven’t worked up there bc it is not busy. PCSD takes all the rejects that other departments fire or won’t hire. And obviously we can see the command staff is far from professional. When I worked there they had about four deputies a night and half the time they just sat around there was maybe on average five calls a night and ten calls was super busy for them LMFAO

  • Guest says:

If you worked there what one were you? A reject, or fired from another agency? You must be worthless to be fired from an agency full of rejects.

  • secret says:

Not all cops eat doughnuts!!!!!!!!!!!!! That cop is a very good cop at what she does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guestpal says:

…in them doughnuts. Bad cop! No more doughnuts for you!

  • SurfCityTom says:

hopes this type of accident will not happen again.

Please keep the Sergeant in the western portion of the county.

We get hurricanes and Yankees here; that should be enough burden for any portion of the county.

  • Guest says:

If it weren’t for Yankees you rednecks would still be growing rice

  • Guest says:

    SurfCityTom,
Maybe she should stay on the eastern side of the county. We have our share of storm damage here on the western side as well, plus the flooding tends to linger for days afterward. As someone who has interests on both sides of the county I’d rather not have anyone running into homes or buildings that I owned.

All jokes aside, she probably had a reason for being in such a hurry. Accidents do happen.

  • Jennifer says:

What an idiotic comment. I hope the only thing you are “Captain” of is your own ship.

  • YesIamAJerk says:

gets plenty of Yankees and hurricane damage too. At least the hurricanes leave a trail of destruction and misery that goes away after a while. The former, not so much. You know what they say about hemorrhoids and Yankees…

  • SurfCityTom says:

unlike so many, I am Captain of my fate. I do not rely on handouts or entitlements.

And frankly, the Captain should have considered his words before uttering them.

If they can not teach a bit of prudent safe vehicle operation, then there is a problem.

Did you miss the comment that there was someone in the vehicle?

  • Bri says:

Other cops have gotten into worse wrecks and they don’t do a report on them half the time. One cop forgets to put her car and park and you go all crazy! Have you ever took one minute to think that you could be hurting that persons feelings, I bet you don’t!! It’s about time you thought about it because, what if you got into a wreck and they put it all over the news!!!!!! I bet it would make you feel bad and you would probably brake down into tears. Doing this is just disrespectful. If I was here i would quit the agency and go to a BETTER PAYING agency that thinks about their cops and the cops family I bet the PCSO disentangle care about the cops family!

  • Guestofthenet says:

As busy as The Pender Co officers are, ita a wonder more things like this do not happen. They are understaffed, underpayed and have limited training. For a Sgt to be arresting someone instead of supervision their personel, that tells you they are overburdened with calls.

  • Memaw 88 says:

One, I am Southern born and bred, so what does a deputy screwing up and leaving a car in gear and hitting a house got to do with whether you are a rebel or a yankee. It was gross negligence that caused this stupid accident and the officer should be ticketed as such. If I was to forget to put my car in park, I would be charged. It wouldn’t matter if I claim it was an accident. Just because somebodyis an officer of the courts and law, they should be treated like anybody else

  • JerkusInteruptus says:

and no irreparable damage was done. A law enforcement officer can do far worse in a given day. The damage will be repaired and the Deputy will have to be reminded of this at every birthday and Christmas party the department will hold for the rest of her career. If she’s hot, every male member of the department will say “hit any buildings today? HeHeHeHe!” every time they pass her in the hall. She’ll suffer enough.
