WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Our Coast Guard Cutter Diligence is out to sea protecting the waters once again. The Diligence said goodbye to the Port City Saturday morning.

Dozens of family members, friends, community members and curious visitors gathered on the riverfront to watch the cutter go. The two-month mission is the first under new Commander Douglas Goodwin, who took over the helm earlier this month.

“Really excited to see how everything is going to go,” Seaman Skyler Oates said. “Not sure if he’s going to change very much compared to the other Commander, but I’m excited. Hopefully it will be a good one and we’ll do some good things.”

Oates said he’s sad to leave his wife but does like being out to sea.

The crew is on multi-mission patrol in the Caribbean. The mission is scheduled to last two months, and the crew is expected to return to the Coast Guard City in October.
