NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC-- The streak of wild weather continued Monday for the Cape Fear region, this time in the form of a funnel cloud.

Weather elements need to come together in a very particular way to form a tornado. It happened last week out in Carolina Beach and it almost happened again Monday near Monkey Junction.

"We were standing there and we saw a funnel cloud that actually formed and looked like it was going to touch down but it didn't," said Wilmington resident Jessica Kemp. "I told my fiance, lets get out of here, but he wanted to stand there and watch it."

At approximately 4:30 p.m. WWAY started getting calls about the strange weather. Shortly after the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. The warning was dropped around 5:15 p.m.

New Hanover County Dispatch reported no damage from the funnel cloud.

"I noticed as the cars were driving by the front they (people) were pointing towards the back," said Monkey Junction resident Sam Ream. "So I walked through the building and opened the back door and I noticed a funnel cloud. I was thinking of ducking and running."

This is the second scare in as many weeks for the southern part of the county as last week a waterspout turned into a tornado after making landfall.

If those weather events weren't unique enough, there is now potential that the Cape Fear region could be in the path of Hurricane Irene.

The Wilmington area hasn't been hit by a hurricane in almost a decade, and not by a category three since Hurricane Fran in 1996.

"I've never experienced this before in my life," said Monkey Junction resident Mary Levy. "To me it's been one wild and crazy week and it just sounds like the end of the week is going to be even wilder than the beginning of it's been."
