RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Bev Perdue says North Carolina officials will be ready for Hurricane Irene should it touch the state later this week.

Perdue said Tuesday the North Carolina National Guard is being placed on standby to respond to possible damage caused by the storm. She’s also directed state emergency officials to check on stored equipment and emergency supplies such as water, food and generators, and for state agencies to get more prepared.

Perdue said she’s also ready to issue executive orders to declare a state of emergency and to help with any clean up and power restoration. She planned a Tuesday evening news conference.

Deputy state emergency management director Mike Sprayberry said Tuesday federal emergency officials will arrive in the state the following day to accelerate preparations.
