BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A 10-year-old boy was bitten by a shark in the water at Holden Beach Wednesday afternoon.

The victim’s father says it happened around 3:30 p.m. in 3-4 feet of water in the mid 500 block of Ocean Boulevard West. He reportedly felt something bite his foot in the water, and then made his way to shore, revealing a bite wound to the heel of his foot.

Holden Beach Police, Brunswick County EMS and Tri-Beach Fire Department responded to the scene within minutes, and Brunswick County EMS took the boy to Brunswick Community Hospital.

At 10 p.m., the victim’s father said his son had just left the operating room and was being transferred to a private room, adding that his son was in stable condition and had a long road of recover ahead.

    Was he a tourist?

I guess you are too young to remember the Land shark from Saturday Night Live.

Was bitten by a shark in the WATER. Wow, Can’t imagine being bitten by a shark anywhere else.

We go to that beach too. I wonder if the people fishing ever think about the chum they are throwing out to lure in the sharks closer to shore……must not cross their minds. Also, I don’t think you are allowed (it’s illegal)to catch sharks from the beach and/or pier at Holden.

We were right there, same location… Mid 500’s. So sorry this happened! My husband was surf fishing on the beach on Monday with his line out about 60 yards or so and hooked a 3-4 ft shark. Took him 45 mins to bring it in… Took a few pics and released it… A crowd was gathered around… Do the boy’s parents recall that? It always surprises me how close the really large fish are to the beach… Including sharks.. They are def out there though… He was catching mostly little Spot, Sea Mullet, Pompano, & Pinfish…

Fishing that time of day where people swim is what brings sharks in close.

To all that has something smart to say about this story, you wouldnt think it was funny if it happened to you or a loved one so be kind and have a little respect for the family going through this. If this is what the world is coming to, I feel for the ignorant people in the end.
