WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The impact of Hurricane Irene will be felt for at least one more day in Pender County as students get an extra day off from school. Pender County Schools will be closed Monday.
The school district says the closure is because several school are still without power after Hurricane Irene, several Pender County Schools remain without power. The district expects power may be restored by Monday, but it takes several hours for district staff to fully restore school facilities for occupancy. The makeup day for students and staff will be announced at a later time.
Meanwhile, it’s back to school for students in New Hanover County and Brunswick County. Both districts will operate on normal schedules with one possible exception. In New Hanover County, there are some ongoing power issues impacting the air conditioning system at Trask Middle School. A maintenance team is working on the problem, but if they can’t fix it in time, Trask parents will be notified directly via the AlertNow calling system of any schedule changes possibly for Trask only.
Brunswick County Schools will make up the day they missed Friday on Monday, October 10.
