WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — WWAY has learned from sources close to Brian Berger that the New Hanover County Commissioner tried to kill himself at his home last night. Berger says the allegations are untrue.

Police and EMS responded to Berger’s home. An Event Report shows the New Hanover County 911 Center received a call from a female, who Berger has identified as his girlfriend Heather Blaylock, at 11:16 p.m. for a medical call at Berger’s home. The notes show that the patient was a 34-year-old male who was conscious and breathing.

The report goes on to say that the “caller does not want to get involved,” and that “she adv subj does have guns in the residence and and possibly knife or whatever.”

Wilmington Police say they were called around 11:30 p.m. to assist EMS. An incident report says Berger had a minor injury. It listed a razor as the weapon. It also said officers seized a gun and ammunition from the home and that alcohol/drugs were involved.

The Event Notes from 911 also say that the call “was advd to save what info she has…that LEO may need what she has on her cellphone as evidence.”

When police arrived at Berger’s home, they were initially unable to make contact with anyone at the house and noted that an upstairs light was no longer on. Eventually the responders said everything was 10-4 and that the patient would meet them at the backdoor, which, according to the notes, happened a few minutes later.

The notes say a police officer then told dispatch that the officer was “10-17 WPD to submit evidence.” 10-17 is the law enforcement radio code for “en route.”

A police spokeswoman says she believes Berger was taken to the hospital. A New Hanover Regional Medical Center spokeswoman says she had no record of Berger in the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

New Hanover County Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield told WWAY Tuesday afternoon he had no comment and that he hasn’t talked to Berger.

Commissioner Jason Thompson also said no comment. When asked if he’d heard about what happened, Thompson said, “I don’t want to talk about it.”

County Commissioner Rick Catlin says doesn’t know anything about it. Catlin said, “I hope Brian is OK.”

County Commissioner Ted Davis says he didn’t know anything about the incident, but he hopes “that’s not the case.”

WWAY went to Berger’s home Tuesday evening, but he did not answer the door. Berger did do an interview with a Wilmington radio station, where he said that he did not try to kill himself and that Blaylock “has issues.” He also claims that Wilmington Police lied on the incident report, making that the second time he has accused the department of lying.

He’s unfit and needs to resign.

I’m embarrased for Wilmington to have this guy as an elected official. However I do get a little 3 second chuckle from all his antics but then I get embarrased for Wilmington again. He needs a good “WHOOO!!” Dusty Rhodes drop kick to the chest and I think we’d all be better off. Thanks.

Ben McCoy set Brian up and sold him to the tea party crazy train. Brian was elected to a job he is obviously not ready for and when he screws up Ben uses the publicity to promote his anti-media and government rhetoric while leaving Brian swinging in the wind.
I met Brian once, he seems a decent fellow. I sincerely hope he gets the help he needs and finds peace with himself

  • Selos says:

Please do not write my name in for county commissioner on the ballet. If they are all like Berger and Buddy Byrd then I do not want that job. Maybe being a State Senator would be a good gig. Or maybe not.

  • Guest1984 says:

Naysayers and critics notwithstanding , he has done a good job. No money for an arts council, no baseball team at our expense, and he’s been willing to tackle special interests. You buck the system and have a former girl friend who is wacky–and this happans. Still, Brian you need to stay away from that girl and do your job–things will work out fine for you if you do.many of us have and will continue to support you.

  • GuestLee says:

Don’t be embarrassed for Wilmington – he’s a COUNTY commissioner, so be embarrassed for the County, not the City.

Normally I like the reporting this station does, but anytime a news organization reports on a supposed attempted suicide and the person denies he/she tried to commit suicide, the news organization always comes out looking sleazy unless they have definite proof the person did indeed try to commit suicide. I don’t see that WWAY had such solid evidence. Unnamed sources close to the person reported on is not solid evidence.

Mr. Berger is one of the nicest, sweetest, sincere and empathetic individuals I have met in years. We occupy opposite ends of the political spectrum, but his heart is in the right place. Not saying he’s Mother Theresa, but how many elected officials would date a single mom with two special needs children, and remain faithful to her for years, and anyone who has seen Berger with those boys and Heather/catherine know how devoted and loving this guy is…which unfortunately on the flip-side makes him prone to being manipulated by Heather and her own mental illness…which is nobody’s business but Berger is so protective of them he would go to jail or take a bullet for heather or her children.

He’s selfless to fault, and many posters here confuse that with other things because they lack Mr. Berger’s capacity to understand and care about others more than he does himself. That’s part of the problem, maybe. He’s nice and his vulnerability and tea party labeling make him easy target. It won’t end the hatred of the few negative commentators but listen carefully and it becomes clear that Mr. Berger is facing up to the hate and not using them as a shield.

I have met heather a.k.a. Catherine blaylock, jones, to(she has lots of aliases) and she is charming, attractive and sweet…but prone to anger & rage when it least expected…and most men would run. Fast. Is she a good mother, yes usually, but when she left the biological father who didn’t seem to mind (what kind of man abandons his own sons?), she’s lucky Social Services didn’t take her kids. Here entire life story is one big question mark, but before you judge imagine if you had no family in your life. Not a happy picture is it?

Catherine will probably be just fine, but based on what I know from a clinical perspective, I would be worried all the time a little bit about her going off, snapping and safety of the students. The county, state, whoever she teaches is taking a big risk leaving ms. Blaylock unsupervised in a room of young children. She’s so young she can mature for sure.. She probably wouldn’t do anything, never intentionally, but anger/rage comes when least expected and more violent than the situation requires. Don’t pull your kids from her classroom give her a chance but stay involved, watch for signs of trouble, maybe ask the school to provide additional supervision for safety and liability reasons (just my advice). Better overkill than ignoring a problem that could erupt any day at any time – and unexpectedly.

Maybe they should split up, that’s there business, but if you saw Berger with those children youd see a couple (Brian and Catherine or heather) that make great parents, and a side to Brian Berger he seems to hide and the media would never tell…it’d make Mr. Bergr look like the good person not typical politician but a devoted family man and faithful and kind. We need more like him, not less.

It is time for this guy to go!He has Too much drama in his life & does not need to represent our county!

  • Guest says:

First of all, Dusty Rhodes wasn’t known for saying “whooo!!” that would be Ric Flair. Secondly, Dusty Rhodes wasn’t much for drop kicks either, you may be thinking of the Rock N Roll Express. Dusty was more likely to get you with that elbow. To Mr. Berger, I like your politics and I wish you all the best. With faith in God, good choices, and associating with positive people, you can turn this around.

  • Guest says:

No joke, I wonder what he would have said if he had succeeded :o) It’s apparent this guy has a lot of things going on in his life rather it be personal or not. It’s also obvious that Berger is not able to fulfill his duties as a Commissioner “what a waste”.
Seeing Berger in the news is like seeing that “Frog” fella and RC Soles, IT’s GETTING OLD….

  • Guest says:

Clearly he did not try AND kill himself. He may have tried TO kill himself. Very different meanings.

  • Guest says:

Her ex-husband has shared custody. He did not abandon the children, he just manages to keep himself out of the public eye. And the boys are not special needs. A little hyper, sure. But what children under the age of 6 aren’t.

  • Beth says:

Just when I thought WWAY couldn’t get any lower you splash this on the front page. Whatever happened to HIPPA? Whatever happened to human decency? You didn’t have to report this, but yet you chose to anyway. That says everything.

  • Guest1889 says:

You people who defend Brian act as enablers. If you think well of him, why don’t you talk him into getting some help. You would be doing him a great favor.

  • Guest234 says:

People who WANT to commit suicide, get it right the first go around…

Here Mr. Pitty Party goes again seeking attention…

BErger.. it’s time to step down.. Go take care of your “issues” so the professionals can finally do their job…

  • Summer says:

Is this really news? People try and are successful at suicide daily!

  • FleetGhhost says:

There have been some very fine commissioners in Wilmington. What kind of people are getting elected to office these days? This man definitely needs to resign. He is not fit to govern the affairs of Wilmington.

  • Guest says:

    Better luck next time?

    Third time’s the charm

If at first you don’t succeed…………………

Do us all a huge favor, resign.

  • Guest says:

The only thing that Brian has done wrong here is buck the system and have a whack job for a girlfriend. WWAY took care of the rest.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

…but not as whacky as HE.

SHE’S not the one whittling on herself with a razor blade, is she?

  • Ken says:

If we could have had a three-way runoff last year between Caster, Berger, and a small Peruvian squirrel monkey, at least the squirrel monkey would not have been in the news as much as Berger. Berger is turning into the “FROG” Strickland of New Hanover County.

  • just me says:

The squirrel monkey would have won!

  • SurfCityTom says:

are the criminal charges about to hit for collecting unemployment compensation while being paid as a county commissioner?

Is he coming out of the closet to reveal he’s one of RC’s boys?

    Stay Tuned.

In the mean time, I would endorse the monkey.

  • Guest2012 says:

Why would you suggest that we be tolerant of an elected official, that we entrusted to be a good steward of our tax dollars and to uphold the law always, but rather he has acted like a NUT case every single day since november the second?
“You are a better man than I gunga din.”

  • Jim says:

Please, to those who can’t wait to jump on the bandwagon, remember this is a human being and a child of God, the exact same as you and me. While Brian might not be your favorite person, he could certainly benefit from a few encouraging words from the public. In fact, that might be exactly what he does need. So to Brian and his family, we pray for your recovery and hope that you will be ok!

  • GuestLee says:

I’m not trying to kick a man when he’s down, but seriously, for his own sake, Brian Berger needs to resign and get his life back in order.

How can he possibly run a whole county when he can’t even get his own life straight? He has been displaying serious lapses in judgement for quite a while now. For his own mental health, he needs to resign and concentrate on his life, instead of politics.

  • Guest1313 says:

No “FIRST ON 3″ for this one????? Somebody must have slept late bc starnews reported this before lunch. Maybe he was depressed by how much people were trying to dig up dirt on him

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

You don’t have to dig at all. The dirt is virtually falling off of him. The man is a train wreck with the maturity, judgment, and emotional stability of a fourteen year-old. Just when we need him to blunt the efforts of the tyrants, he’s tripping off-line into la-la-land.

My only regret is that we didn’t have a three-way runoff last year: Caster, Berger, and a small Peruvian squirrel monkey.

  • Guest757 says:

If you’re elected to office he should have known all his skeletons that he had in his closet were going to come out. just like the rc soles saga the police keep getting involved so what did he expect.
it’s time for brian to go…

  • Guest says:

Commissioner Brian Berger needs to resign his position as county commissioner. He should get his personal affairs in order and seek whatever help he needs. It is apparent that he does not have what it takes to continue on as an elected representative. He has been a walking, breathing disaster since the say he swore into office.

  • Guest757 says:

He shouldn’t be at the hospital… he should be in the Oaks…

  • Peyton Garrett says:

Here We go again. Mr. Berger has managed to lay low for what, a month? I am beginning to believe He does this on purpose. He knows if He breaks wind He is going to end up on or in the news. I am beginning to think He likes it. It props Him up. Makes Him feel good. Draws pity from His whack job of a girlfriend. Makes Him the center of attention, good or bad. He had all of the ingredients. Alcohol, drugs, knives,a gun and the best He can do is scratch Himself? And, they send him Home? He gets drunk, fights with his girl and another episode for My Brian Berger file. Only 3 more years.

  • brendle99 says:

Again with this woman. What makes her such a credible witness.I don’t much value on her phone calls. Remember, she accused Brian of assault and the court dismissed the charge. A woman scorned???
