RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina is setting up a fast-track
system to allow new charter schools to open in time for classrooms
to open a year from now.

The state Board of Education meets Wednesday and Thursday to
consider several changes to school policies, including allowing
charter schools already screened once to open more quickly than
usual.

A committee on Wednesday and the full school board on Thursday
are expected to approve allowing fast-track charter school
applications in some cases. The new policy would apply to charter
applicants that were interviewed by the State Board of Education
earlier this year but couldn’t get approval because of a statewide
limit of 100 of the alternative public schools. That limit was
removed in June.
