WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY'S 'THE RANT') -- New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger has only been in office some eight months now. Seems much longer, honestly. He's been in the news numerous times over those some 240 days. Just Google his name and check out page after page of stories. They're not about his voting record, or even his leadership. They're all about his shenanigans. He can't show up for meetings on time. He can't keep his relationship with his girlfriend under control. He can't keep the police from being called to his house. And now it seems he wants to blame all that on everyone else ... the media, the police, the good ol' boy network. You name it, and they're out to get him.

It all started back in March, when Berger emailed County Manager Bruce Shell and other county employees a lengthy rant, accusing them of withholding information that he had requested.

He also accused fellow Commissioner Rick Catlin of holding secret meetings and stealing his notes then passing them off to the media. At that point the commission actually discussed censuring Berger and heightened security at meetings because they were concerned about his temper.

Then in May he claimed commissioners ambushed and verbally attacked him at a planning session meeting after getting there 30 minutes late. They wanted his opinion about funding Wilmington Downtown Inc., but he refused to give them an answer, even though he sits on that board. The meeting got heated and Berger claimed he had been attacked viciously and on a personal level.

Just a month later, Berger's girlfriend Heather Blaylock called police saying she needed their help picking up some of her belongings at Berger's house. She said she didn't feel safe being there by herself. In fact, Berger ripped the handle off her car trying to stop her when she drove away. Police arrested Berger, he spent the night in jail and was told to stay away from Blaylock. Charges were later dropped and he and Blaylock are still dating.

Berger now calls that a "false arrest" and says he has met with Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous to discuss an accusation of the police being out to get him.

Also this summer, the local newspaper discovered that Berger had lied about his claim of being a consultant and was drawing unemployment from Washington, DC. It was tipped off to the unemployment paperwork by a county employee. Berger then demanded that the sheriff's department investigate who leaked the information, even though the information in the documentation was public record. The investigation turned up nothing and was closed.

This week, police were called to his home yet again, the third time this year. Blaylock called 911 claiming Berger was upset and needed help. In the police report, Blaylock says Berger had guns and a knife. It also says Berger had a cut that was made with a razor. Police removed a pistol from his home which Berger denies owning. He was also taken to the hospital and released.

Berger says it was all just part of an ongoing argument with Blaylock regarding the arrest in June. He also called out Chief Evangelous claiming police falsified the report, which says alcohol and or drugs were involved.

And now he finally admits Blaylock has issues and is causing undue drama.

Mr. Berger, STOP PLAYING THE VICTIM! No one is making you date this woman. No one keeps you from showing up for meetings on time, if you show up at all. No one causes all of this dysfunction in your life, EXCEPT FOR YOU! It's time you grew up Mr. Berger. Being a county commissioner is a job for an adult. From what we've seen over the past eight months, you are not capable. May we formally suggest that you make a tough decision and either break up with Heather and get your act straight, or resign ASAP so this county can get back to business. You are a distraction and have single-handedly made the New Hanover County Commission a circus.

After reading his diatribe

After reading his diatribe earlier this week in the Star-News, Brian Berger does not impress me with his middle school mentality. I hope he pays dearly for what he has done. He is a disgrace.

Time to resign and go into therapy...

Sounds like an unfortunate case of Borderline Personality Disorder. Those in doubt,Google it.Very sad for everyone. He needs to resign and focus on his health issues, which likely require regular and lifelong commitment from him working with a skilled therapist.

This joke

It has come to my attention that frog and old RC got in the water together and something flowed down river to where ever Mr. Berger came from because he is just as big a joke as the Tabor boys are, put all 3 of them in jail and what would we have for news around here?

Brian represents about one

Brian represents about one six-billionth of the world's population. In his mind, he is right and everyone else is wrong. Brian, can you say paranoia?????

GO AWAY

Hey Berger
How much more will you continue to blame others for your weakness? You have proven that your are a weak person and yet you continue to participate in the Council..
Either pull up your boot straps and admit your faults or get out of the way for someone else to take your place on council

Auto loss due to Berger

A few months ago I was involved in car accident with Mr. Berger. My car was a 1999 Saturn in very good condition and was paid for so I had taken extremely good care of it knowing I couln't afford a car payment. I did not know Mr. Berger personally but had heard of him in the news previously and thought the incident would go smoothly because of his position. Boy was I wrong. Mr. Berger had auto insurance with Gieco for a BMW but not for the jeep he hit me with. Mr.Berger was very unprofessional and unconcerned about his actions. He would not return calls from myself or the insuarance company and never called them to report the accident. Although I was the victim in all of this I had to make all the calls between my inurance and his and only when I left him a voicemail that I was going to report it to the news did he call me back. His insurance could not make a decision on whether to cover the accident since the jeep was not insured at the time so on the ninth day of having no vehicle I told them and Mr. Berger that I would let my insurance cover it under my uninsured policy but would press charges against Berger for not having insurance. That afternoon miraculously I got a response that his insurance would cover the damages. Unfortunately the damage was more extensive and was totalled. I was paid for the car but still have not been able to find a vehicle in the condition mine was in for the little bit of money they gave me. I think Mr. Berger has many issues and how he became a county commissioner I'll never know. How can he take care of count business when he can't take care of his own?

Oh boy . . .

here we go again. Mr. Berger had the moxie to get elected with the backing of strong supporters. I suggest now that one or more of those supporters become Mr. Berger's personal assistant, keeping him on track, on schedule, focused, and out of trouble. In big city politics you get an assistant with the job, but here in "little ole Wilmington" you have to provide these for yourself.

The Berger File:

Narcissist. I am right and everyone else is wrong. I can think of a couple of more people Mr. Berger has in his political circle who think the same way. They have that right. Everyone has that right. Mr Berger, Your escapades just always end up in the public light. What should be personal problems always turn public with You. This is no right wing conspiracy, Your political stance has been noted as conservative, though with Your often rambling, unprepared dialog it is often hard to understand what You are trying to convey. Now calling out the chief. Instead of an E-Mail go see the man and see what his explanation is on the differences of what was observed at your home on the night in question. I am sure The Chief would also like this matter cleared up....Publicly. Now if this turns out not in Your favor, I would expect your resignation from the board the following day. If the Police Department is supplying a falsehood, I expect Heads to roll also. Don't wait a month. This should be addressed Now. Right now all You are doing is wasting the time of public assets and that needs to stop.

ENABLING

Then QUIT enabling him! Repaort NEWS and not BS!!!!! Just like with a crack- head, instead of giving them money, you are giving him coverage! TAKE RESPONSIBILTY WWAY3!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian Berger

Mr. Berger seems little other than the sort of person who stands today for elective office and who the people gull themselves and are gulled into choosing -- perhaps for a complete lack of truly qualified and dedicated public servants. The United States Congress seems awash in sex-related scandal which, if not for the plain incompetence, would be laughable. Some men in government, Bill Clinton leaps to mind, think that its a frathouse party.

We need responsible and principled leadership. Mr. Berger, take a leaf from ex-Congressman Weiner, RESIGN.

This was what the almighty

This was what the almighty Tea Party put into office.

Berger needs help

the first thing Mr Berger needs is a good attorney, this "rant" is a vicious attack on a man that appears to have some seriously problematic personal issues. Since when is a news organization allowed by the FCC to use it's licensed ability to ruin people's personal lives because of a political agenda? This is absolutely no different than what you are accusing Berger of, lack of proper judgment. To state that Mr. Berger is playing a victim when in fact he may truly be a victim is slanderous. "No one is making you date this woman" Reverse that, go into a domestic violence shelter and tell these women that no one is making them stay married to their abusive spouse, and while you are at it call their victimization an act.

You have honestly crossed the line, but then what's new....

Public Official

He's a PUBLIC official, and the public has every right to know all about his life. If a public official is going to be making decisions that affect my life, I need to know what kind of person is making those decisions.

This article was an opinion from a WWAY employee. It's like an editorial with the newspaper. No slander (or libel) about it.

Josh Billings once said, "Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well." Mr. Berger has not played his cards well at all.

You've never heard of editorials?

I'd say that WWAY was being merciful toward him.

BTW, you should take the time to learn the legal definition of slander so that you can recognize opinion from slander.

It's called "libel" in this

It's called "libel" in this case, not "slander".

Libel is written (or published).
Slander is spoken.

The original poster called it "slanderous"...

...which is why I suggest that he learn the difference between slander and opinion.

However, it also doesn't constitute libel. Just as I stated regarding slander, there is a distinct difference between opinion and libel, which must always be founded upon incorrect information presented as fact. This is especially true in the case of public figures, whom the law assumes will elicit "opinion" across a broad horizon.

Anyone with a basic reading comprehension knows that stating Berger is "playing the victim" is editorial opinion. Stating that he is consistently late for meetings and has been involved with the police more than once is factual information. Presenting a cumulative list of Berger's shortcomings in one editorial does not elevate it to the point of libel.
