SHELBY, NC (AP) — Dozens of cats and dogs seized from a Shelby home are being examined to decide which can be adopted and which will have to be euthanized.

Cleveland County officers responding to complaints from neighbors say they seized about 90 to 100 animals. The sheriff’s office says 61-year-old Carolyn Grayson Owens was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor animal cruelty.

County health services coordinator Sam Lockridge says around 70 animals were crammed inside the home and Owens and her husband slept outside. Lockridge says windows were boarded up and furniture and containers full of belongings and clothes were stored on the front porch and outside.

He says all of the animals were taken to the county shelter and those with illnesses and diseases will be euthanized.
