RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina legislative leaders are ready to turn in proposed new boundaries for North Carolina’s congressional and General Assembly districts designed for use starting with next year’s elections through 2020.

An attorney for the Senate Redistricting Committee says the Legislature and the Attorney General’s Office planned to file the district lines Friday with the US Department of Justice and a federal court in Washington.

The filings mark a two-pronged approach by Republican legislative leaders to get a seal of approval that the boundaries approved by the General Assembly in July comply with the federal Voting Rights Act. Democratic legislators say they don’t.

The maps can be “precleared” by federal lawyers, or a three-judge panel can rule the boundaries are lawful. Lawmakers would have to redraw lines if they aren’t approved.
