RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to prevent production of North Carolina’s new anti-abortion “Choose Life” license plates.
The group filed the lawsuit Thursday, claiming the plates violate the First Amendment because pro-abortion rights license plates are not available.
The General Assembly approved the design this year along with 79 other new specialty plates. Nonprofit pregnancy counseling centers opposed to abortion would collect $15 from each plate sold.
One of the plaintiffs in the case, Sue Holliday, says she’s not opposed to anti-abortion license plates in principle, as long as pro-abortion rights plates are also available to drivers.
The ACLU is also seeking a temporary restraining order blocking the manufacture of the plates until the lawsuit is decided.
