WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Football season is here, and what good is the pigskin without the pep?

Varsity and JV dance teams and cheer squads from across the area took to the mat at Battleship Park Saturday to determine the best of the best in the Battle of the Schools.

The teams competed for a chance to take home the Battleship 50th Anniversary Trophy. WWAY along with other community sponsors helped put on the free event, which took place with our beautiful city in the background.

“Cheerleading is just really fun because, honestly, all the bonding and all the girls just hanging out and making friends,” said Hoggard High Varsity Cheerleader Payton Collier. “Just cheering on our team and our school. It’s just a lot of energy and spirit, and it’s just really fun.”

Collier said cheering is a lot of work but well worth it. Although all the squads gave their best effort, the South Brunswick High Dance Team took the grand overall prize.

WWAY’s Coach’s Corner will showcase the cheerleading contest. The Coach’s Corner airs Sunday at 6 p.m.
