LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Leland Mayor Walter Futch joins a growing list of politicians who apparently don’t want to answer tough questions and then cancels interview appointments.

Last night after the town council meeting, Futch agreed to come to the TV station today to do a live interview at 5:30 p.m. However he called this morning saying he didn’t like the story we aired last night and canceled the interview.

During our interview Thursday night, Futch admitted he was “out of touch” on issues like a former Leland police officer being shot in the groin 12 or more times and Leland Police Chief Tim Jayne punching another officer. He said his only job was to set policy, even though he’s an elected official, the “face” of the town and ultimately part of a group who manages the town manager.

He told us this morning that he didn’t say he was “out of touch.” We then offered to send him the video. He said it didn’t matter, because he wasn’t coming for the interview.

Really. Spoken like a brown noser. Best management practices say that you should not avoid, it only makes you look guilty. They should have made a prepared statement and held a public conference. Isn’t government supposed to be open. Why shoot the messenger?

  • Guest73 says:

I can’t blame Futch for canceling the interview with WWAY. Yes, I believe he needs to address the public about issues going on in our town. However, with the way WWAY slants the news nowadays and tries to be TMZ, I don’t think he’s obligated to subject himself to such immature, vengeful reporting. Now if he’s a smart man, he’ll offer to address the public about Leland issues thru an interview with WECT, a more reputable station when it comes to local news reporting. Sorry WWAY, we don’t allow bullying, such as Jason Thompson’s kind, across the bridge. So don’t try to bully Futch into an interview.

There have been numerous cases filed with the EEOC,wait and see. Everyone knows how Leland operates.

  • guesty says:

Another slimy politician that got caught with his pants down and isn’t smart enough to remember what he has said.

  • Wade griffis says:

Over the last few years, I had begun to think that Leland was actually not the “Redneck Capitol of the World.”

    I was wrong!

  • Guest757 says:

It sounds like the Mayor has his head in the sand… What a joke this man is.. He makes Barney (from Mayberry) look really smart.. I wonder if he really watched the tape and sees just how stupid he looked? i

  • Leland Boy says:

I suspect the Mayor got word that other civil lawsuits are coming down against the town and its police department. I can’t imagine the town attorney wanting him to comment when there are other issues.

The mayor has been so busy with Hurricane Irene, I am sure he failed to communicate with his Town Manager and his Chief of Police regarding other issues involving that Good Ole Leland Police Department.

  • Leland Girl says:

What other civil law suits? She received her whole $10,000 after taxes… If you get in a car accident and sue the other driver.. The insurance company gives you $10,000 almost automatically bc it’s cheaper than going to court. It seems the town got their money’s worth… $ 25,000 to make her go away! It seems to me she was looking for a lawsuit from the start. If this guy Skip saw the pictures and the pictures were marks to her legs .. Then that is not her crouch.
Wake up people… This sounds like an ambulance chasing attorney and a lady who was looking for a payday. Most people would have sued for at least their worth… And would have sued to have kept their job. Unless she was only making $18,000 year .. She knew she didn’t have a case and settled for what she could get!!

  • RM says:

It is so easy for most of you internet ‘message posters’ to sit back and roast anybody in the news.

    Hang in there ‘Buddy’.

  • guesty says:

But in the end it seems Leland is just another Mayberry or Hazzard County town.

  • wake-up says:

Most of the people commenting on all these post about Leland live there….So I point the finger at the voters you guys put these wonderful people in there positions of power. Nothing is going to change as long as the local elders stay as council members. As for everything getting said on here, how would you feel if someone followed you around asking questions about things that you either didn’t know about or did??? Besides she settled for $18,000 does anyone else think thats a little low plus you don’t have a job anymore??

  • Guest100 says:

Brown noser? Your comment or name calling or whatever you call it doesn’t even made sense. You must be a WWAY person.

  • OtherGuest says:

    Here’s an idea…..

When the public figure is offended by the manner of the potential interviewer, they should volunteer the information being requested to a competitor.

This way, they do not have to endure any unduly harsh or ungracious questioning. Their duty to the public is met and also, they have bolstered the competition’s position, thus diminishing the position of the offensive questioner.

  • Guest99x says:

If this guy Futch is so “out of touch” with issues, how could he have been so sure that NH County Comm’r Thompson had a financial interest in the proposed skyway bridge…. Lil Miss Futchie knew a lot when he was slandering Jason and he wet his panties like a little girl when he got called out. NOW he can claim that he’s “out of touch”???

  • OtherGuest says:

    It is not a joke.

If we do not NOW start demanding our elected representatives answer the press freely and fully regarding any public matters, we will soon become victims of our own complacence.

It is unfortunate that some news media are not quite as civil and graceful as they should be in public discourse. However, these public officials have a duty to address matters in a public forum, namely when asked by the press.
