BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools are dealing with multiple incidents on their buses. Last week we told you about a child put on a wrong bus. Friday a student was left with a bloody eye.

Friday a student was on the bus heading to South Brunswick Middle School when he another student cut his eyelid with a pair of nail clippers.

School district officials met today to discuss the issue. A spokeswoman said the student’s name cannot be released.

That student was hurt and ended up getting off the bus. A family member found him and took him to the hospital.

School officials are in contact with the family, but would not disclose any disciplinary action that may be taken against the other student responsible for the incident.

The bus driver, Johnny Hooten, has been suspended without pay for two weeks. He must also complete additional training before being reinstated.

this is reduclious, this is what happens when a bunch of imature middle schoolers get together, they act stupid. in this case a kids eye lid was taken off. if i was the driver i would of made both of the students get off. he mad the one with the cut eye lid toget off only a few streets from his home. its not like he made him walk from wilmington. the driver should of reported the incendent. but that is beside the point. this man is losing 2 weeks of pay all bc of 2 childish middle schoolers being stupid on the bus. the kid that cut his friends eye should of been suppended off of the bus for ruogh housing and having a deadly weapon. the driver shouldnt be hit this hard for something that happen behind him while he was watching the road

1. Another student was the one who injured the victim.
2. A driver has upwards of 60 kids per bus load.’
3. A driver cannot keep his/her eyes on every student every second…. the road must be the priority…..

So. I fail to see why the driver was suspended from working when it was the kids who did the action. The only thing I can think of is that he did not report it, but as a bus driver, I can’t tell you the amount of times a friend of the child will come up and get a paper towel, or whatever, and noone will say anything to me. Then when I get a phone call and have no idea, does that make me a neglectful driver because
NOONE told me? I’m just trying to see why the driver was suspended and the school did not take action against the student who cut the victim.

Just why kind of screening do these bus drivers submit to? This is the second incident in less than 2 weeks…what kind of losers are allowed to transport our children–this is NOT acceptable!

how was the driver accountable for this incident? So far, there has been nothing posted or reported which lays the blame or accountability for this at the driver’s feet.

On the other hand, why have there been no charges pressed by the Parents of the cut student against the clipper assailant?

And I wonder how many attorneys have been in touch with the injured party and his or her family with thoughts of bringing an action against the school district and the other student’s parents?

Well, how about that?

One student cuts another student above his eye and the school bus driver gets suspended for two weeks without pay. Was the driver responsible for searching each student to insure none were carrying weapons before boarding the school buss? If so, is a “Nail Clipper” to be considered a weapon and have students and parents been made aware of this? Did the injured student report the incident to the driver? This story only makes one wonder what was left out and if nothing was omitted from this story, why was this driver even suspended for two weeks? It appears one thing Brunswick County beleives in is “Reactive Overkill”.

Why did this child have nail clippers in the first place at or going to school? Depending on the nail clippers make, they could be considered a weapon. Surely this child’s nails do not grow so fast that he needs to trim them throughout the day. I can picture him now, kicked back clipping his nails and listening to the teacher. We are at school to teach, not baby sit and watch kids clip their nails and put on makeup.

From the first report I read, it stated that the bus driver let the kid off the bus as he was gushing blood from his face, holding a bloody paper towel over his eye, when the mother just so happened to be driving down the road and spotted her child walking.

If that’s the case, then I think maybe he should be punished more severely than the other one. That’s just plain pathetic.
