WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thinking about dessert tonight? How about helping a good cause while getting your fill?

Pancreatic cancer took the life of judge and veteran John Carroll in May. Today would have been his birthday. To honor him family and friends are sponsoring a fundraiser at Mandi’s Ice Cream on Market Street.

They are collecting items for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina all month long. And money from a special John’s Tracks Sundae will go toward the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Friends hope the fundraiser will not only help the community but also let people know how special John was to many.

“When a person passes, a period of time after that there’s not a lot of discussion after that. But when you got someone who has lived a life like John has led, you want to keep his legacy and name out there and let people know what he has done,” friend Travis Robinson said.

Mandi’s Ice cream is open until nine tonight.
